Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Is this it, the 4 month wakeful?

DD went from sleeping through the night since she was 2 months old to now waking 2-3 times per night and not going to bed until 8:30 instead of 7:30. She hardly naps more than 30 minutes now too.

She has to be rocked to sleep for a good 20 minutes until I can put her down where she won't wake up. She's breaking out of the swaddle but won't sleep at all without it. We've tried just 1 arm out to start weaning but even that isn't working now and she has to be fully swaddled.

DH doesn't hear her wake up so it's all me, all the time. Please tell me about the 4 month wakeful and how long it lasted for you all? I'm about to go crazy from sleep deprivation.

  • Grace used to sleep 9-11 hours at night from 6weeks until 15 weeks. Ever since 15 weeks she has been up 2-4 times EVERY night.

  • The fact that you are still swaddling (including her arms) at almost 4 months is going to get you into trouble.  It's only going to get harder to break that habit and it sounds like it's already a problem. If I were you (and I realize I'm not) I'd get that figured out and then worry about whether or not it's the 4 month wakeful.   IMO.  good luck.
  • This happened to me last week. I ferberized over the weekend an he stopped almost immediately. It was tough but the best thing...he was ready and I knew he wasn't hungry or anything. He just wanted face time with me.

Thanks, I realize it's a problem which is why we've been working on it for the last couple of weeks. I don't think that's what's interfearing with her sleep though.

  • Ditto what MrsBatty said. It's tough to hear for sure but I'd work on the swaddling issue first before you worry about the wakefulness. Reason being, if you try to resolve the wakefulness first you will still have to worry about the swaddling thing later, right? Makes more sense to resolve the swaddling first just to save you the agony later on. Anyways, good luck and so sorry you are sleep deprived. We can all relate to that misery for sure!!
