a friend told me yesterday that some association had come out with new recs that babies should be rear-facing until 2 years of age now. did anyone else hear this? i can't seem to find the study online.
Yes. The AAP now rec. 2 years of rear facing. If you google extended rear facing you will find lots of information. Also, if you want to see video evidence search for extended rear facing on you tube. Children who forward face at a young age are much more vulnerable in a car accident. My almost 2 year old rear faces and will until her brother grows out of his infant seat - so at least 3-4 more months.
Edit: And I should add, yes their feet will touch the seat. Reports of broken legs in toddler who rear face are rare to non-existent while reports of toddler/babies who forward face with severe neck/spinal cord injuries are far more common.
Re: new car seat recs?
Wow, that's a long time. Wonder how you're suppose to make LO fit, rear facing for that long.
I have not heard that but I'll look into it.

Interesting.
I planned on rear-facing until he simply wouldn't fit anymore, but I have a feeling it will be before 2 years. We are very long folk.
