Baby Names

OK, I'm asking...How popular is "Claire?"

We decided on this name and I see it all over the nest now.  I really did not want a popular name.  (To put it in perspective, we'd definitely not go with Aiden, Ava, Olivia, Emma, Grace, etc.)

Our last name is Smith so it seriously makes a difference:)

Re: OK, I'm asking...How popular is "Claire?"

  • Claire is climbing the popularity chart on the social security's baby names list. Last year it was 62 though, so its not like its in the top 10 or 20. I love the name, but I do see it all over the nest/bump.

  • I don't think it's overly popular.  I don't know any young girls named Claire.  Just my MIL, which is why I will NEVER use it!

  • I see it on here more as a middle name than a first name. I really like it and don't know any Claires.

  • I hope it's not getting too popular. This has been our top pick for at least 5 yrs... I see a lot of it on here too. I'm also noticing it as a character name a lot more on TV since LOST started. Maybe I'm just paranoid!

  • I agree with a pp it is a popular middle name, but not as popular for a first name.

  • I wasn't even going to post the question because I don't want to suggest it:)  But I've seen it more on here.  I did know about the #62, but that was 2008 and I'm afraid it will be in the top 20-30 by 2011!
  • I know at least four Claires who are my age, and it is #62 on the SSA now, while it was #158 the year that I was born. But my name was #102 the same year, and there was only ever one other Julie at my school at a time, so it really depends. I don't think it's extremely popular, but if you think that the popularity will bother you, especially with your common last name, then I would probably use it as  middle name :).
  • Claire Smith is a little plain. I'd go with a 2+ syllable name.
  • Popular names are popular b/c they are great names!  Who cares!  If you like the name, go for it!  It's a beautiful classic name.
  • I don't know any Claires. My mom doesn't have any in her preschool either. I absolutely love the name and would totally use it if it sounded good with our last name which it doesn't.
  • We used Claire for DD and even though it's growing in popularity, we know a lot of kids her age and none are named Claire.

  • It's climbing the charts, but I don't see it as much as a first name, since it IS just one syllable. However, I do know a baby named Claire.

Claire is also my middle name.

  • I like it a lot, but I don't like a 1-syllable name with your last name.

  • I know 2-3 Claires and a Clare who are my age.  I don't know anyone outside of our age with that name.

  • I've seen it everywhere...i think it is only going to get more popular for a few years...i'd shy away from it if you aren't cool with the other top contenders.
