x-post burp cloths & cloth wipes ?

I picked up a ton of fabric on sale yesterday to make my cloth diaper wipes.  There's enough that I can make a few burp cloths, especially since they're so quick & easy.  However, I have a dumb question.  Is there a reason the patterns and those they sell in stores are such an oblong, particular shape?  I get that you might want them to be long-ish to go over your shoulder.  But do they have to be so narrow?  If you've every used/owned them, is there a different size you'd prefer them to be?  (I found a tutorial for just sewing flannel backing on cheap cloth diapers like Gerber.  I like that, but have a ton of muslin and other supplies I can use, too.)

Also, if you use/made cloth wipes for diapers, what fabric did you use?  If you used something thinner like cotton flannel, did you double-layer?  I was thinking I'd make half of them with 2 sides and half of them double-sided & thicker.

  • I made burp cloths out of scrap cotton, knit and flannel. I just made rectangles that were about the size of a prefold. I sewed a few straight lines down them as well to keep the fabric together but essentially just two layers of fabric, one on the front and one on the back. I made cloth wipes out of the Gerber washcloths (the ones w/o the edging) and flannel. So flannel on one side, terry on the other. You could do flannel on both sides though and be fine :-)

  • I prefer a wider cut for burp clothes (like ProudArmy my favorites are about the size of a prefold - maybe just a bit longer to really go over my shoulder well).  I had a world-record spitter so the more coverage the better!
