? for those with hardwood floors

what do you use to clean them? we got ours in november and i am tired of sweeping/wet jet swiffering. there has got to be a better way to get them clean and have them stay clean.

has anyone tried a hardwood vacuum? is there a better mop/cleaning device? any recs would be great! :) tia!

Re: ? for those with hardwood floors

  • I've tried the swiffer sweeper vac, and it's okay, but the battery seems to run out pretty quickly.  We also use our regular vacuum with a floor attachment and it works okay too.  Oh, and we use Bruce's hardwood floor cleaner for mopping them every once and a while.  I'm with you though, it's really hard keeping them clean.

  • (We have laminate floors, but I think this might help you too!) We have a microfiber swiffer looking thing we got at Lowe's. It's really quick to just zip it around and unless the floors are filthy, all the little pieces usually stick to it fairly well. I try to do that every day now that Will's crawling, but I used to do it every other day. It seriously takes about 5 minutes and our entire house is wood, aside from the bedrooms and kitchen.

About once a week we'll do the swiffer wet jet, but again, we did that a lot less frequently when Will wasn't crawling.

  • We use a regular vacuum and then swiffer when it needs it.  We vacuum a lot b/c of he dog,  but not so often with the swiffer b/c our only hardwoods are in a bedroom(we swiffer our laminate in the kitchen often though)

  • We have laminate and we have to sweep and swiffer daily. It is such a pain but we're used to it.
  • They are hard to keep clean. But it made me realize how filthy our carpets must have been.

I sweep daily - especially after dinner b/c DD is messy.  I use the swiffer (normal) to get dust bunnies a couple times a week.  It's great for under furniture and it's quick.

I have the Hoover Floormate.  I only use it occassionally when I want to get it really, really clean.  Other than that, my made fully mops the house every other week. I usually just spot clean anything I can't get up w/ a broom.

  • I agree with PP about realizing how dirty the carpet in our old house must have been.. seeing how quickly this floor gets dirty makes me cringe at what it must have been like. Ick.

Anywho... we run the vacuum over it at least every other day, more often lately now that the dogs are inside a lot with the weather. And when we need to, we use the Bruce cleaner and a microfiber mop to really get it clean.

We used a swiffer for a while, but it left streaks and took a while to dry. I like the Bruce because you spray a small area, mop it, and then move onto the next area. No buckets, no waiting for it dry, easy. Just toss the microfiber pad thing in the wash when you're done and go about your business.

  • Our whole downstairs is hardwood, even the kitchen and the powder room.  I vacuum it with a regular vacuum, or sometimes use a broom and dustpan on it.  The broom actually seems to work better -- I have one of those little short Asian brooms with really soft bristles from the Asian market, and it's great.

For actually cleaning the floors, I mop with Method Wood for Good and the accompanying microfiber mop every day or as close to it as I can.  Definitely every day in the kitchen and breakfast room; I kinda fudge it on the other rooms.

About once a month, I get down on my hands and knees and clean the floors with Clorox Green Works multipurpose cleaner and a rag or paper towel.  Again, I try to do that at least once a month in the kitchen because that floor obviously gets the dirtiest; the other rooms I do as needed.

  • Our entire first floor is wood.  We use a vacuum with a wood floor attachment weekly to get up all the dust bunnies and such and then spray with hardwood floor cleaner (don't remember the brand - it's from HD) and use a microfiber type mop (we do NOT use water on the floor).  For in between, we have a big microfiber duster mop - it's long and flat, reminiscent of the mops they use at basketball games to clean off the court.  We also have a dirt devil vacuum broom.  It's so so.  We use it around the kitchen table mostly.  Ok, the truth is the cleaners do the work every week and I rarely clean in between.  It usually looks ok for several days but between the dog'a footprints and her fur it starts to really need a cleaning after about 5 or six days.
