creating my CD stash... tell me what I am missing please

First of all, thank you all so much for ur advice! This board has been such a big help for me as I have encountered the potentially overwhelming world of CDing. I am done with the first tri and had a u/s and the jelly bean is healthy and looks great so I am finally starting to relax (not all the way though, I don't think that will ever happen) and allow myself to buy things.

I am not planning on CDIng in the very beginning so I don't have any of the NB size diapers. THis is what I have.

6 BG 3.0

6 BG organic aio

1 day pack of flip system (2 covers and 6 liners)

i am planning on also purchasing:

6 HH onesize with the snap closure

What else do I need. do i need prefolds/snappies/covers for diapering even though I'm not planning on using CD until LO fits into the onesize? If so what is recommended?

Also please recommend your diaper rash cream and detergent.

We currently use Purex free and clear and i have read that it would be ok to continue using. Does anyone have any experience with this? My friend is using Rockin' Green Detergent and loves the scents. I would like to just be able to continue using Purex.

I'm not overly concerned with organics and all natural products. My reason for CDing is the cost savings more than anything else, second of course to how cute the CDs are!

Sorry this is so long, and thank you all so much in advance! I hope I don't sound too naive, lolHuh?

Edit: I figured I would see which diaper I like best and purchase a few more of that one if necessary

  • you don't *need* pfs and snappis unless you want them.  i like them for summer because it's hotter than balls out here and i'd just let DS run around in only a prefold when we were at home.  I used purex f&c initially until i got too lazy to go to target to buy it.  18 diapers is the smallest stash i'd use, you'll have to wash every other day once your baby can fit into them (for us that was about 2 mos old).  that might be one reason to get a few prefolds, so you have a "spare" in case you have a rough diapering day or you need a few more dipes to get you through to laundry day.

also, do you have any cloth wipes?  they work way better than disposable ones.  we used both and ran them all through the wash before tossing in the trash.

  • Loading the player...
  • Having some pfs/covers/snappis on hand isn't a bad idea when the stash is in the washer and dryer.  I'd do at least 6 of the premium size and 6 toddler which is what I had for the longest time.  Now I have 18 of each in addition to my slowly growing stash.  And get at least 2 or 3 snappis since those buggers stick themselves to weird places until you can find them.

We use Weleda or CA Baby diaper cream.  I still use some cut up fleece as liners but I don't think you have to with those on the CD's.

I used Purex F&C up until earlier last year and then I started having build up issues with it, but that was also partially because I couldn't wash as frequently as I needed.  Just make sure you get all the suds out in the wash and you should be ok to use.  I've heard good things about the Rockin Green though.

And also the OS probably won't fit until the baby is about 10lbs.  We started using them on DS around the 9-10lb range and I still had some minor blowouts as I was learning on how tight to get them on him because he had such skinny legs.

  • We don't use diaper rash cream as it has never been necessary - rashes generally clear up with a little air on the bum or in extreme cases, a bit of tea tree oil.  You seem to be missing some sort of storage system for dirties - a wet bag or pail or whatever.  You don't need prefolds, they are an option just like the BG3s are an option.  Purex free and clear seems as good as any other detergent indicated for cloth diapers, just make sure you get the free and clear and not another variety of the Purex.

Soundsl ike you're on a good track though :)

  • ok so i think getting the prefold/ snappies thing sounds good. And if i remember correctly they are fairly cheap.

I can use prefolds on a newborn too right? I was just reading the EFF blog and think thats what it was saying. Can I reuse the covers after changes or do they get washed each time too?

What covers are recommended? are these like the old school plastic panties that i wore?

And also, I plan on doing CD laundry pretty much everyday... I will be SAHM so I think I will be able to manage to get them done, at least most days...

we are planning on using disposable wipes, at least until i can convince DH otherwise.

and I do still need a dirty storage system... I'm thinking trash can with a cloth bag in it and washing the cloth bag each time I empty it (maybe having at least 2 cloth bags so i can rotate them). Ahhh so overwhelming, but so exciting!!!

  • You can definitely use prefolds on a newborn - we used all prefolds until ds was big enough to fit into OS diapers.  There is a bit of a learning curve to find the fit that works best for your baby to hold the newborn poop in (or most of it in), but really, only took a few days and I was pretty much a pro ;)

You can re-use the covers as long as they don't get poop on them, but alternate with each change so they can air out/dry before using again.  We used proraps (fit him best when he was first born but outgrew very quickly) and xsmall thirsties (they still fit ds at almost 14 lbs). Bummis are good, too, I think - we are using smalls right now and I like them (we're using bummis super brites).

So, I would say if you are going to use prefolds (which I love - I think they are the easiest of all the diapers) and covers, you should probably have at least 4 covers for newborn.  I think I had 6 and I was never in need of a cover.  Figure three for rotating use in one day while the other three are in the laundry.

Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy - I hope everything goes great!

  • Prefolds are great!  They are usually my laundry day diaper, but they really are awesome.

I loved cloth diapering a newborn.  I used a combination of prefolds and fitteds, though I did have one XS BG AIO.  I had 5 covers (3 XS Thirsties, newborn prorap, and bummis super brite).

For dirty diapers, I use a trashcan with a step on it and I have two planetwise pail liners that I alternate between.

IMHO, you don't want to do laundry everyday.  I SAH and I have enough to do without having to do diaper laundry every.  When DD was a newborn, I did laundry every other day.  Now, I do it every third day and it is wonderful.

  • Don't waste money on pfs and snappis unless you know you will use them. We used Purex F&C for the diapers for a while and I just switched to tiny bubbles because every other month or so we were getting some smell issues and I would have to bleach them and rinse, rinse, rinse. Hoping this will help with that. If you don't want the hassle of using diff detergents just try it at first and see how it works for you.
