What do you mean by "no nutritional value"?

I don't understand this in regards to cereal and the "to give or not to give debate." Cereal has calories and vitamins so I need more clarification on what a food needs to have "nutritional value." Sorry if this is a stupid question but I don't understand.

  • I agree with you.  The cereal we get (Earth's Best Rice Cereal) is fortified and does have nutritional value, IMO.

  • its like you eating iceberg lettuce. it fills you up, its food, but the nutrients it provides are minimal.

Well, the cereal we use has a daily value of 45% iron (not to minimal IMO).  I know it isn't as "nutritional" as veggies and fruits, but it sure is a good start for most babies.  My pedi recommends it for babies with reflux, or those who show great interest (like mine) because rice allergies are very uncommon.

yes, but your LO is getting what they need from formula and/or BM. im not saying its good or bad, just that they dont need it to be nutritionally sound at this point.

The cereal doesn't have iron - it's fortified.  There are natural sources of iron that are also recommended as first foods.  But you're right, rice cereal in particular has a very low chance of being an allergen.  If a parent waits until 6 mos to into food though it can  generally be skipped.
