Babies: 9 - 12 Months

7 month olds - How many bottles?

DS currently takes 5 bottles (6-7oz/33oz).

I know it's recommended for them to drop to 4 bottles and then down to 3.  When is this recommended and how do you go about it?  In the past he just did it on his own.

I don't see this happening for us anytime soon.  I can't increase his bottles either otherwise he spits-up.

Everything you said is same for me. Except it's sometimes 6 bottles. I told my ped that DD was still having around 30-35oz plus cereal in the morning and a solid at dinner and she said that was fine. She said as we introduce more solids it will be easier to drop the amount of bottles per day. I am the same way with not being able to increase size of bottles due to spit up too. You'd think if she was given more she would take less bottles, but she spits up a lot more and then gets hungry again. But my ped said there was no rush so I'm just going as is and hoping she'll just one day figure it out as she does most things.

  • We're on 4 7oz bottles and 3 solids meals. We finally dropped his dreamfeed last week without a problem, but we were only feeding him about 4oz for the past month at that time.

I don't know anything about dropping to 3. But, Mason often leaves about an oz in each bottle (except for his 8pm bottle- he sucks that one down).

I would suggest lowering the amount your offer him on the bottle you want to drop, or try stretching out the times between bottles 30min at a time. Then eventually he will get to taking only a 3-4oz bottle at one feeding and then you can just cut that out and he won't notice. Mason goes about 4 to 4.5 hours between bottles. When he's extra tired/growth spurt, he will sleep through a feeding and go almost 6 hours between bottles. I let him do what he wants on those days!

My pedi said that at Mason's size, 28oz a day is an impressive amount and she was surprised he wasn't eating more than that. She actually doesn't want us to give him more formula than that and instead offer veggies if he seems hungry. (I think she's a weight nazi and might be concerned that he's so big).

  • Oh yea, the ped also said that right now her main source of food should be the bottles (or bf if you do that) but by 9mths it should be down to about 50/50 with solids. So we still have time to figure this out!

  • DS eats 3 8oz bottles a day, plus 3 meals of purees and usually snacks on some puffs and sometimes some banana slices while we eat dinner.  He dropped to 3 bottles on his own, but I'm thinking about adding another (small) one a few hours before he goes to bed in hopes that it will help him sleep better.
  • We are still at 6 bottles of 5 ounces each.  At our 6 month check up he was actually 7 months, and my DH asked our doc if that was about right or if we needed to work on dropping a bottle and she said that it sounded perfect and that we would be revisit it at his 9 month appointment.  But for now, it's still supposed to be their main form of nutrients as well as water that they need.  So I think what you're doing is just fine.

  • I am still doing 5 6oz bottles. I am really bad at giving him his solids.

  • DD usually drinks 5/6oz bottles. It really depends on how much solid food she eats. We're in the process of transitioning to 2 meals/day and I've been noticing that she isn't always finishing her last bottle of the day, so instead of 30oz. she's been drinking more like 26-27oz. - not a huge difference though. I just follow her cues.
  • Thanks everyone!  Sounds like he's right on track.

We're still doing 2 meals a day, so things may change when I introduce a third meals down the road (I'm thinking around 8 months).

  • I think you're right on track.  While my LO is less than 7 months, he's 22 lbs and he's getting 5 bottles (6 oz) during the day plus 3 meals...then an 8 oz bottle with rice cereal at bedtime.  Sometimes he'll drop one of the daytime bottles and sometimes he only eats 2 meals, but in general I think you're doing just fine.
  • Guess I miss memos all the time (lol)

Our Pedi said to give them their bottles on demand but to also do  fruit in the Morn and Veg at night ... they already get cereal for their reflux (which is still so bad) But as I think of it I think they are doing around 5 or 6 bottles that range from 4 oz to 6 oz. One 6 oz in the morn .... their fruit .. then a 4 oz snack bottle (as we call it) then another 6 oz later ... then the dinner ... then MAYBE another snack one and then Their late 6 oz bottle ....

  • Jaslyn drinks 5 six oz bottles a day. She also has solids twice a day. I hadn't even considered dropping it down to 4. Our Pedi didn't mention it last month.  But I'm guessing like you said, once we start doing solids 3x a day they might drop that 5th bottle.
  • T is just over 8 months and we're still averaging 5 6oz bottles per day.  Occasionally he'll only take 4, but it's definitely not the norm.  He's only doing 2 solids meals per day.

  • DS was on 4 bottles a day at that point, and he still is. Some days he doesn't want it, but for the most part he still takes 4, 4-6oz bottles and also 3 meals.

  • 6 bottles still no matter what I do. 3 8 oz and 3 6oz. These boys are always eating and never sleeping.
