Can I pls get some dust for my brother?

My middle brother (who is 10 yrs older than me) couldn't shake a cough he had so a Dr came over (they use white glove) and in the course of checking him out/listening to his heart asked if anyone had ever told him he had a heart murmur. He just had appt with cardiologist who told him he has to have heart surgery to repair his mitral valve. Understandably, he is freaking out. He is fit, trim, a very healthy 45 yr old with 4 kids (12, 10 & 6 yr old twins). Seemingly fine one minute, open heart surgey the next.  He hadn't told my mom b/c he didn't want to worry her, but when he finally did, she told him that my dad had the exact same thing, but his wasn't bad enough to warrant surgery (and he died of unrelated causes).

About MVP: The mitral valve prolapse (MVP) syndrome has a strong hereditary tendency, although the exact cause is unknown. Affected family members are often tall, thin, with long arms and fingers, and straight backs. It is seen most commonly in women from 20 to 40 years old, but also occurs in men. The tall, thin, long arms/fingers part describe my dad & brother to a T. They are suggesting I get checked out too.

He is having surgery next week. I am told it is a fairly routine procedure and he has a fantastic surgeon, but it is open heart surgery... And it will be a 6 week recovery.

So if you can spare some, my brother could really use a little dust for smooth surgery & speedy recovery!!

It may be too late and not knowing his condition of his heart, but there is a procedure in which they can replace the MV w/o OHS.  They can do valve replacements through a heart catheter procedure.  The procedure is called Percutaneous Valve Replacement.

  • Good thoughts to him!

I don't know if they discussed this or not (I'm assuming they did b/c his surgeon is supposedly one of the best around). I'll ask my bro about it though. Thanks!

  • Lots of dust!  That's a lot to take in when you are just expecting to get an RX to clear a cough...

Double check that procedure mentioned above.  FIL had testicular cancer and his docs here were going to take one course of action, but my FIL had other ideas.  He did his own research and ended up going to a hospital in Seattle to have some "seed pod" surgery that was much less invasive, little recovery time, etc.  His doctor here hadn't even heard of it and it wasn't necessarily considered "new."  His doctor here gave it a big thumbs up, as they coordinated treatment with the Seattle docs.
