That is the craziest thing I have ever seen. Who got all that data for such specifics? Are these the kind of questions I should expect on the 2010 census?
That is really interesting! I always heard that CA called it Coke but according to the map that's not true. I can't believe someone actually took the time to do this.
Okay now what do you suppose they call it on that map where it says other? I'll have a COLA??

My 5th grade teacher was from Wisconsin: she called it a water fountain, we called it a bubbler.
I actually found the opposite to be true. When I moved to Wisconsin and was working, someone asked where the bubbler was. I think I looked at her like she had two heads - wtf is a bubbler? Lol!
I'm from MN and call it pop. Now I live in NC and sometimes when I'm ordering food at like McDonalds, I'll say I would also like a pop and they'll have no idea what I mean until I say soda.
I'm a soda girl....Don't know why though because I was born and raised here in OH and everyone here says Pop.
As for the map, I know a friend of mine went somewhere (can't remember where) and they always called any kind of soda "cold drink" lol. If I say coke, I mean an actual coke! lol.

I call it soda but thats b/c when I was younger I would ask my dad for a pop and he would ball up a fist and ask it I wanted a pop. Around here you hear it called both.
First, I think it's really weird that anyone would compile that sort of data, and second, I think it's wrong. At least, for my region it is. According to that, 80-100% of people where I live call it "pop". I've lived here my whole life and heard maybe one or two people call it that. I've only ever heard "soda".
Oh, and I have heard the "everything is Coke" thing before. And that's only true as long as it's not Pepsi.

Growing up in Idaho it was always called Pop. Where we live now it's Soda and I'm thankful because I like how that sounds much better! Silly I know!

In Texas everything is a coke, even if it's Sprite or Dr. Pepper or whatever. Saying pop or soda let's me know that you're not from here - it's like a passport.
I call it pop. We're stationed in North Dakota and when I say pop, they reply, "you mean soda?" I also made the mistake of asking for sweet tea when we moved up here, I was told, "we have tea you can put sugar in."

I'm from Georgia and it's all Coke to me. DH is from MN and he calls it pop. We're military, so I have to adapt some... but at home, it's always coke. And don't even get me started on sweet tea Mrs.Jazz We were stationed in Alaska for 3 years and I loved every second of it... except for no sweet tea. So sad.
I call everything Coke too. So, the discussion pp suggested is spot on.
I also don't think it's that weird that someone researched and collected data on the topic. I just think about how the range of dissertation topics I've heard. There data for just about everything.
Re: Random Observation: Soda vs Pop
Its common, although I hate it.
I grew up calling everything Coke.
Here is a map that breaks it down by region.

oh. my. gawd. this is hilarious.
makes me wonder what us californians say that ppl think are funnny ....?
I think if someone were to ask me where the bubbler is I would go get the bubbles out of the cabinet.
It must be a southern thing, because it is Coke to me...regardless of brand/flavor
My nephews call it 'drink' when they want a coke
guess Ive been living in a bubble - had no idea it was so controversial
?
Yep! That's how it is here!
I live in Ohio, and people here say "pop" It drives me absolutely insane! I'm a military brat...it's SODA to me!
I never heard "pop" until I moved to Ohio.(My family are made up of all east coasters)

Sadly, a professor complied that map as part of his research.
Random.
here is another map:
Wow. I'm totally shocked that "soda" seems to be the smallest. I wonder what the "other" call it.
