Talk to me - baby wearing

I am thinking with this baby, I may try wearing him more.  I bought the Baby Bjorn with DD, but really never used it.  I have some back issues and I felt it was a bit hard on my back.  Did any of you use the Ergo or Moby Wrap?  How did you feel about them?  Were they tough on your back at all?

Re: Talk to me - baby wearing

  • I loved my Ergo--no back problems at all.  It is designed to distribute the baby's weight to your hips and take the strain off your back.  I was able to carry my daughter much longer with the Ergo than I could without it.

For a newborn, you need to buy a special insert to use the Ergo.  Or you could start out with a Moby wrap and upgrade to an Ergo when your baby gets bigger/heavier.

  • i have the ergo and the moby.  now that she's bigger we're exclusively ergo.  but i would have given my right arm for the moby when dd was a nb (we didn't get one until she was 2 months).  it is magical.  i could do laundry, wash dishes, walk around the city.  i could bend over and she stayed snug against my chest.  i even went to the bathroom on her (i know some people got all crazy about this on the earlier boards, but whatever, i wasn't about to wake her up just b/c i had to pee!).

i got some crap about baby wearing from my old school family, but when they realized i hadn't completely damaged her and made her "spoiled" they got over it :)

eta:  i also got the ergo nb insert and maybe i'm not so bright, but it never worked for us.  dd always felt like she was falling out of it.  neither one has ever hurt my back or caused me any hip pain.

  • got my ergo a few months ago - LOVE IT! night and day difference between the ergo and the bjorn, with the ergo the clear winner :)
  • Loved my Ergo but DD didn't really like the infant insert since it pinned her arms (she was very high needs) but the good thing is I can still use it and it didn't hurt my back.  I think the Moby is great (I made my own but will buy one for this LO) so it's just a matter of do you want to have to tie it or just buckle it.
  • I have an ergo and moby wrap and much preferred the moby when DD was a newborn and prefer the ergo now.  The ergo does require an infant insert, but you could save yourself $25 and just roll up a thick blanket.  You could probably find some videos on youtube if you look around.
  • We have a Connecta, which is a similar concept to the Ergo, but less bulky. I ordered it online and we have used it a lot, from where he was very little to right now. We use it less now that he's walking around, but it will works! It's fine on the back and he always seemed to like it.

  • I used a wrap, snugli and two different slings with DD. Loved my hotsling -- super easy to get in and out of, used it from four months on and wish I'd gotten it sooner! I took DD in it everywhere -- grocery shopping, airplane travel, etc. and it made my life so much easier.

A friend gave us a ring sling. It was enormous on me and I couldn't get it to adjust small enough; hated it.

The snugli was okay for when DD was very small, but it got hard on my back very quickly so we didn't use it long.

I got a wrap from BRU -- I think it was called the ultimate baby wrap or something. No back problems with this one. I somewhat liked it when DD was small and I was just wearing her around the house, but I found it very difficult to get in and out of it and can't imagine wrestling with yards of fabric so I could wear her into a store. I had a particularly hard time getting both her and myself out of it.

DH got me a Beco for Christmas and I already love it and can't wait to use it with the new baby. Sometimes I put DD in it while I'm running errands or if she wants a piggy-back ride. She fell asleep in it the other day while I was browsing through a store. It's so comfy and distributes her weight really well. I can do a back-carry with the Beco easily with her at 25 pounds, even though carrying her in my arms is getting to be a bit much sometimes with being 30 weeks along.

  • I still use my Ergo! I love it, and dd now gets to ride on my back.

She also loved it as an infant. (I've never used a moby)
