Too much to ask (NTR), house related

I would like to buy a house:  3 bedrooms, 2 and 1/2 baths, 1800-2100 square feet or so (so not huge by any stretch), decent shape- built in the last 20-30 years or so, nice kitchen, mostly move in ready, decent neighborhood and public schools.  And I would like to spend about or under $350,000.  Is that too much to ask in your area of  the country?  If so, or if not too much to ask- where are you located?  I am in the northeast and this isn't so easy to find.

  • You could find a nice place here like that. Central Ohio.
  • Loading the player...
  • If you went to certain suburbs I don't think it would be impossible to find, but we are looking in the NW burbs and it would be pretty difficult to find something that didn't need work (updated bathrooms and kitchen) in that area.

  • You could def. find that here, probably lots of them.

ETA....sorry...that is in SE WI/Milwaukee area.....but you could find that "most" anywhere in WI.

  • I live in NY - what you are describing would be at least $500k.
  • Do you want to buy our house??  We're in MN and it fits your qualifications exactly (and the price is about $100,000 less)!  We've been trying to sell for a year and getting frustrated!
  • lol, move to the midwest and you'll find it for much less than that

  • Our 4BR 3BA 2800+ sqft house on .5 acre would go for ~$225K. That's about the average here. We have 3 houses on our street for sale all 3BR 2.5 BA on .5 acres ranging from $205K - $225K. All built after 1995. They are pretty common here in the SE TN area.

Yeah, it's about $400k here and would definitely be $500k closer to Boston.

  • I have a 4 bedroom, 2.5 house that was in move-in condition built in 1978.  I think we spent $180k for it 18 months ago.  I live 35 miles from Pittsburgh.  It's a smaller town, but we have just about everything we need other than DSW and a few of my other favorite stores.  The downside is I'm unable to get a job, and I'm a middle school Math teacher with 15 years experience.  There's a complete glut of teachers here.

Now, I moved from a 2000 sq.ft. townhouse in Richmond, VA, built in 2000,in a very nice neighborhood.  I sold it for $226,000.  Big difference.

  • That is simple. You can get a house here for maybe $150,000. But we live near St. Louis and land is cheap in the  midwest.

The nicer, newer homes go for $250k-300k. Some go all the way up to $700k. But for a basic house, $150 can actually go pretty far.

Yeah, that is what I figured- and we have these ridiculous winters to top it all off!!!

  • In Omaha NE that price range would buy more than what you are wanting. My parents last house had 2 1/2 bath with 4 bedrooms upstairs and room in the basement for 2 more and a extra family room. This was a brand new house and was less than $350,000 built.
  • you could easily get that here (NC)
  • Don't move to the bay area (CA) then!  The lovely house you just described would be over $1M here.  So depressing.
  • Hmm, maybe for what I can get somewhere else I should move my parents with me and buy them their own house and get two for the price of one and I wouldn't lose my best babysitters and moral support!
  • I'm on the northside of Indianapolis, and you could find what you are looking for for around 150K-200K.    Other parts of Indiana, it would be much lower than that.

  • we live in NW Ohio and you could EASILY find that here.  We live in the country but if we lived in town you would have the nicest house on the block, for sure!  But I can understand how you feel.  I'm originally from a bigger city and the housing differences are pretty amazing.  it's just a give and take.  the take is that i'm 35 minutes from a Target/Starbucks/etc.

  • I used to live in Providence, and yes, that'd be hard to find. My sis is in the Philly burbs and is looking at 3 bed, 1.5 bath, 1600 sq foot houses for the 250-290s.

Here in MI we got a 2400 4 bed, 2.5 bath for 290, so in the midwest, it's completely doable at that price.

  • Oh my goodness you could get a gorgeous house here.

Take this house, for example.. https://cnyhomes.com/Listing/Search/info.cgi?mlnum=S214471

I live in Syracuse, NY. The home is in the suburbs.

  • That is our house exactly and it was less than $350k.  We're in your state too! Cranston :)
  • You'd have to spend AT LEAST $200,000 more in this area. Its depressing.

  • BTW, my sister moved into a brand new house- 4 bedrooms, 2 & 1/2 bath, huge house, beautiful kitchen, lots of land... for 250 here.  She's selling it by the way, lol... because she moved to NC.  Let me know if you want the listing :)
  • You could find that here.  In fact, you would probably come under budget.  We're in SE Virginia.  I am from RI and one of the reasons we're living here is because it's just too expensive further north, but we're still within a day's travel of family.
  • So wish you could find that here!  DC area is NOT where you want to be :-)

Holy goodness!  Yeah, that is a little more than I was even thinking- maybe I should head to Syracuse!

  • Here it depends on how far you want to live from the city (Chicago).  If you don't mind living farther out (1 hr + drive, but there are commuter trains if you're going downtown daily for work) you could find that.

  • Here in Texas, you could get a house that size for well under $200,000.

Wow, nice!  We are thinking more northern RI (Lincoln, Smithfield, Cumberland)- but my friends live in a gorgeous house in Cranston for that as well!  High taxes though...but yeah, we may have to extend our search- I know I can get that in Coventry too.

Nice, thanks- however  I would have to bring my parents with me so I'll have to let you know!

  • You could get a house right on Lake Erie for that around here!  Our house is 1400 square feet and we paid $140,000 last year.

  • You could buy a McMansion here in KC for that price.

  • Depending on where you look in central NJ, you could find that type of house for around that price (although not in Princeton) as well as Buck's County, PA (I think).
  • Dear God, some of these responses are making me ill....
  • North Carolina...Cary/raleigh/chapel hill you would find a REALLY nice house for $350,000.

My mothers house is a ranch style, built 20-30 yrs ago..GREAT schools! Great neighborhood...close to major highway..with out the noise factor. Close to everything..grocery store..target..major shopping.

    3 bedrm..2 bath..deck..2 car garage..not sure on the yardage...and her's is priced at $180,000. I really loved that area!!

Yeah, a bunch of my friends live in Boston- I get no sympathy from them!  LOL!

  • It would be hard to find something like that here, at least in a nice neighborhood. My in-laws live in not so god area and the house was originally a 3 bd 2 bath. (I say originally, because they have done extensive remodeling, including using the whole back yard to add bedrooms onto the house, since my husband is 1 of 10 kids.) The estimated value when they got their house looked at about a year ago was around 325,000.

On the other hand, my dad, his wife and my dads sister have a 2 story, 4 bd, 3 bath in a really good area (mostly seniors and hills and reveens) and when he bought in 2004, they paid 555,000.

Oh, and I am in the Los Angeles area.

  • you could find that here, Twin Cities
  • South Chicago suburbs - no prob!  my house is 3/2.f at 1600 sf + basement and we have a pool in the backyard.  It's valued around 185-190k now.
  • You could buy much more house for that amount of money where I live.  I have a 4 BR, 2 1/2 bath, 2300 sq ft house with a LR, DR, KIT, FM, and Gameroom.  I paid far less than $350,000.
