RePost: Tylenol PM and a cold

(Thanks to those who responded this morning. Just wanted to get some more opinions from the evening crowd)

Has anyone taken this and what are everyone's thoughts?

It's on my doctor's "safe to take" list, but I really hate taking anything at all right now, especially since both Tyleonl and Benadryl (the PM part of Tylenol PM) are classified as class B (meaning there have been no tests on humans during pregnancy).

I've got a cold right now and can NOT sleep with a sore/dry throat and completely plugged nose. Is it better to take it at risk and get some sleep or to suffer without sleep?

Has anyone had a similar issue with a previous pregnancy and everything was fine?

  • Do you have a cool mist humidifier? That has helped me a ton.

I do take Tylenol PM when I'm having sleeping issues. Probably at least 5 times so far this pregnancy.

  • I would take the medication you need your rest.

  • Take it and get a good night's sleep.  Don't take it every night....but I took it a handful of times my last pregnancy.  You need your sleep honey.

Yes, I use it every night, lately with the Vicks liquid you can add to it. Doesn't really help. It's the sore throat that really gets me and once I lay down, the nose is plugged so breathing through the mouth is a must and that makes the throat hurt even more.

  • I had a big head cold at around 14 weeks and I took tylenol cold for 4 days because thats when it was the worse and I didn't want to take it for that long. It helped me out I was still sick for a week after but just not as bad. I did steam in the face and just slept a lot and took off work. Also, I had a soar throat and just had some cough drops but I didn't use that many of them just when I couldnt handle it anymore.

Do you think I could take it a couple nights in a row then not again for a long time?

     (super cute siggy pic btw!)

  • My doc recommended Unisom and I took it for three nights in a row when I had a sinus infection.  It was a GOD SEND.  Get some rest and let your body heal up--then go back to not taking the meds.

    Feel better!

  • I took it for about a week straight and still take it occassionally as needed.  That and Vicks vapor rub under my nose- to keep it open helps!

  • I took Benadryl almost every night of my pg with DS. My high risk doctor said it was perfectly safe to take every night. I have a beautiful, healthy almost 2-year old. My sister did the same and she has two perfectly healthy boys, 3 and 5! Take it, its better for the baby if you are getting adequate rest or you'll never feel better.
  • A drug being category B does not necessarily mean no studies have been done on pregnant women. It is an either/or type thing. Either there are no studies on pregnant women OR the studies they have done with pregnant women do NOT show any risk to the fetus during any trimester. I work for a drug company - I know my pregnancy categories and have gone over them in great detail with doctors.

Category C means there are no studies in pregnant women, but the benefit outweigh the risk (think antidepressants).

PS) Other "B" drugs include Zantac, Tums, Nexium... Even your prenatals are Category B.

Of course, I'm talking about the USA FDA guidelines.

All that said, take the Tylenol PM and get some rest. Obviously I should have, since I'm awake at 3 am and miserable.

  • I had a horrible cold at the beginning of December. I called my OB, and the nurse told me that it's safe to take Tylenol PM to help me sleep. Just not NyQuil or anything on the 'do not take' list! I took it and I'm fine!
