How can Vitex or Chaste berry help me in getting pregnant?
The key to getting pregnant, besides general health and well being, is ovulation and regular menstrual cycles. Vitex or chaste berry has an excellent track record in relieving complaints in women, caused by hormonal imbalances, known as Premenstrual Syndrome. It may also be helpful for women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) who do not have a normal menstrual cycle. These women thus don?t ovulate or menstruate and cannot get pregnant. The condition when a woman does not have any menstruation at all is known as amenorrhea.

A large percentage of these menstrual problems are related to insufficient progesterone during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, which is called a luteal phase defect or corpus luteum insufficiency. A corpus luteum insufficiency is defined as an abnormally low progesterone level 3 weeks after the onset of menstruation. Insufficient levels of progesterone may result in the formation of ovarian cysts. In addition, some women suffering fro PCOS have too much prolactin, which can inhibit fertility. Vitex may help with both of these problems.

  • I took it for several months.  It is supposed to help you O earlier (or at all), lengthen LP, have a stronger O, etc.  It is basically a mild, herbal form of Clomid.  It did nothing for me.

TTC in 2008. Stage II/III endo, Hashimotos hypothyroid, low morph (3%).
    2 cycles Clomid/Ovidrel/TI/Crinone=BFN.
    IUI #1 - 4 Follistim/Ovidrel/IUI/Crinone = BFN.
    IVF #1 - Antagonist w/ ICSI 4/10. 17 retrieved, 5DT of 2, BFN :(
    IVF #2 - Long Lupron w/ ICSI 6/10. 15 retrieved, 3DT of 2, BFFN!!
    Lap 7/21/10
    IVF #3 - Clomid/Antagonist w/ ICSI 10/10. 14 retreived, 3DT of 3, BFP 10/20 but m/c. No HB 11/15/10 - D&C 11/17/10.
    FET - 2 blasts, 1 survived the thaw. Transfer 2/19. Beta #1 3/1 375, Beta #2 3/3 885, Beta #3 3/8 4261, Beta #4 3/11 9005. U/S 3/8 1 sac 1 yolk, U/S 3/16 1 heartbeat 114bpm!

It says right on the bottle to not take it if you are pg.

  • I hope you don't mind my answering.  It was actually the first herb I started taking after I started treatment with a naturopath in early 2006.  It didn't help me at all on its own, but with time, regular acupuncture, and many many added other supplements and herbs, it did help.  It was the first line of defense (or offense!) though!  I just highly recommend seeing a naturopath before and while you're taking it, and definitely let your RE know you're taking it as well.  Feel free to page me on SaIF if you have any questions.  I wish you the very, very best! :)

  • I'm late getting to this but I wanted to add that I was on it for a few months that were in between cycles. As soon as we went back to Clomid, I was told to stop taking it. You are not supposed to do both,, just as a heads up. GL. Oh, I didn't seem to notice much of a difference but I wasn't doing acupuncture or anything like that at the time.

I got that, but I figured how does it help with progesterone if you aren't taking it in the 2ww when you need it most...?

I took it twice a day every day for a year.  I stopped after my BFP. :)  Like I said above, definitely speak to a naturopath though...don't just take it on your own! ;)
