Success after IF

If you got pregnant with an IUI, please come in...

Has anyone here gotten pregnant with an IUI (medicated or unmedicated)?

This may seem like a silly question but it seems like everyone that I see on the boards tries 3-4 IUIs then moves on to IVF.  We are gearing up for our first IUI in March (still recovering from a lap for Stage IV Endo).  I'm trying to stay hopeful but am starting to wonder if we would just be wasting our time with the IUIs (I'm over 35). Our only issue is my Endo and my age, DH sperm count is very good.

 TIA!

  • There are lots of us here. #1 IUI worked for us!
  • My third IUI with injectibles (I have PCOS and didn't respond to clomid) was the one that resulted in this adorable baby in my belly.  Had it not worked, we likely would have explored IVF options.  I think it's just typical to follow three-strikes-and-you're-out.  And also given our age (I'm 39), we didn't have time on our side.  There are positives and negatives on either side.  IUI is obviously less expensive, but IVF has better success rates.  If there is an underlying problem, IUIs don't seem to reveal them, but IVF, as a more involved protocol, can figure those out.

  • IUI #2 with clomid did the trick for us. Good luck!

  • the first IUI worked for me...i was unexplained but had slightly elevated FSH.  I took clomid with trigger and IUI

    good luck to you!

  • IUI worked for me, but it took a change of drugs.  I think it is the drugs that are the issue, not the IUI itself.  I had 3 BFN clomid/iui cycles and got my BFP on my first IUI with follistim.  My DH's sperm was also great.  I think IUI is MUCH less invasive and not as hard on your body as IVF and I would much rather have several IUIs before going through IVF.  GL to you.

  • Hi there, I'd say try the IUI's as a start, but also realize there are other factors with endometriosis that may make IUI's less likely to work. The remaining endometrial tissue tends to release cytokines and hormones around ovulation that may be 'toxic' to the eggs after release and interfer with their ability to be fertilized. Obviously some people still get pregnant the old fashioned way with endometriosis, but it seems like a lot of Endo people 'fail' the IUI test and move on to IVF to have success.

There are some good articles on this if you do some searching, and talk to your RE about it. In my case we also had some MFI, 36yrs, and with severe endo and OOP went to IVF (and happy we did!).

  • My second IUI with inj worked!  And I was 37 when I got pregnant.

  • I am 38 with unexplained secondary IF.  I got pregnant on IUI #3 with it being the first round on injectables (Repronex).

I would suggest doing the injectables with the IUI.  GL to you!

Thank you for this...this is what I was thinking/worried about.  Since I just had the lap followed by 3 btb cycles on bcp my RE thinks we may have a better chance with IUIs now.  I'm still worried about wasting time since I only have a few months to get pregnant while off the pill before the endo starts coming back full force.  Our insurance covers unlimited IUI but we have no IVF coverage.

  • I have PCOS.

My RE will do clomid or femera with IUI 3x's before moving to injectables + IUI for 3 cycles- then to IVF.  He said after 3 failed IUIs with those meds the success rate plumets - so he doesn't bother doing any more and moves to more aggressive treatment (either the inejctables or IVF).

I got pg on my first cycle of IUI + clomid (and metformin+ trigger) with Griffin and it took 2 cycles of the same to get pg with the twins.  I was 33 when I got pg with Griffin, and 35 when I got pg with the twins.

    good luck!!

  • My 1st and 3rd injectables/IUI cycles worked - but the first ended quickly in a chemical pregnancy.  The results of the third are in my siggy, IUI can work!  I got pregnant with Jack at 36 and had him when I was 37.  I had three, possibly four mature follies when I triggered, and got pregnant with one baby.  GOOD LUCK!
    Wheee!
