unsolicited advice??

How do you handle unsolicted advice from others?  Not like helpful tips from Mom or MIL, but comments like  "oh no..you must do it this way" or "no no you are doing it wrong...this is the way" or "you know what you have to do"  from co-workers, acquaintances, or even almost complete strangers...Everyone LOVES to give their 2 cents...how do you handle these comments???

Re: unsolicited advice??

  • Smile and say thank you.  Then decide if you like the advice or not!  Every one will always give you tips on the "right" way to do everything!  From the minute they find out you are pregnant!  :)

  • Just say, "thanks for the advice" and change the subject. My MIL warned me before I was even pregnant that she was going to give me lots of advice and was worried that I will be offended. I told her that unless I ask her for advice, she doesn't need to give me any!
  • It's probably better to just say thanks or smile and nod, but it really pisses me off when people give "advice" that is counter to what I am clearly doing.  Like "maybe you should put DS in another room and then he'll sleep longer", etc.  I usually quote whatever doctor or book I got the opposite advice from.  Like when my dad said "you should let him cry for a while before you feed him" (Seriously, WTF?).  Apparently feeding on demand is a no-no in my dad's book?  Whatever.  I immediately went into the accepted knowledge that a baby doesn't manipulate you and starving him wasn't going to improve our bond or my baby's health.  SO ANNOYING.  I love doing this with older people i.e. my parents age.  It's kind of a kick in the nuts - like - wow, it's been so long since you raised kids, you actually don't know what you're talking about.  LOL.  Only the ones that try to lecture, of course!
