Pregnant after a Loss

Anyone diagnosed w/ group b strep?

I tested positive for this at my 9 1/2 wk appt.  My dr said it isn't a concern right now unless I have syptoms, which I don't, but I'll have to go on antibiotics when I'm in labor to prevent the baby from contracting it.  I'm sad that I already have something to worry about so early in my pg (as if I wasn't worried enough after having 3 m/c).  Has anyone else been diagnosed with this, and if so how is your dr treating it?

  • Well, thats why they test early so they know in advance so they can protect you and the baby... I wouldnt worry about it too much!!

  • I had it w/ DD.  It was diagnosed near 36 weeks and everything was fine.  I had nothing bad happen and the only thing was that I had to have IV antibiotics when I went into labor and went to the hospital.  Don't worry about it.  In most cases, when treated, it is not a big deal.

  • I had it with DD#1...91/2 wks is really early to be tested!! It could go away on its own, they'll test you again closer to deliver, 35+wks. So don't worry about it until then. GBS is a very common bacteria that lives in most people and doesn't cause us ANY harm; but you can pass it to baby during vaginal delivery and since baby doens't have an immune system it can cause them serious problems. If you test + for it agian closer to delivery the docs will prescribe you oral antibiotics, and then probably give you IV antibiotics while you're in labor to kill off the bacteria. This course of treatment is generally sucessful and baby will likely have 0 problems ifyou're treated.
  • I assume they found it in your urine, yes? That should be treated now and then you will be treated once you are in labor.  25% of the population carries GBS - it's very common.
  • I am GBS positive & have had 3 m/c's also.  GBS is common, and it's definitely better to know your + status prior to delivery.  IV antibiotics should prevent any transmission & subsequent respiratory issues for baby during delivery.  <Try> not to worry.  :)  This is something that is easily managed.  Just make sure you tell your doctor/hospital staff your status if you happen to go into pre-term labor.
