Do you eat Subway/deli meat?

I've been told by so many people not to eat lunch meat because of the possible listeria. Is this true? I have stayed away from it so far but sometimes Subway just sounds so good.

Re: Do you eat Subway/deli meat?

  • Yes, its true. But I still eat it occasionally. I try not to eat too much lunchmeat in general since its not fabulous for you. But I do it it once in awhile.

  • I still eat it! Get it toasted and you will be fine.
  • That's what they say. And since I'm not a big deli meat fan, I don't bother with it while pg. I know a lot of people scoff at this recommendation, but I think it's a small thing to give up to avoid any risks to LO. You can, however, heat deli meat up and eat it safely.
  • I eat deli meat whenever I feel like it. I ahve with both pregnancies and had no problems. Its a personal choice though, listeria is a possibility from meat that is not prepared correctly or has been sitting out or is not heated.
  • I eat it and I LURVE it!!!

  • I would totally eat it if I didn't have to watch my salt...

  • Yes, but probably only about once or twice a month. I also get my sub toasted, just to be sure.
  • I dont really like my brad toasted so I have them nuke the meat
  • I've only had it a few times while pregnant.  I had a few cravings for turkey sandwichs.

  • yea I was told not to eat it...but I still did. I cant give up the occasional italian sub! lol
  • I do. Not heated or toasted...honestly the bump is the only place I really hear not to - I have had two different OB's and neither said anything about lunch meat.
  • I've eaten deli meat a couple of times during this pregnancy.  I didn't eat it at all until I was well into my 2nd tri.  I am also very selective about where I get it from.  I choose places like Primos that keeps all their meats and cheese in the fridge and slices your sandwhich when they make it.  I do worry about the risk, but I also believe that being smart about your choices and limiting the dangers are ok.
  • This is normally a worry that most women in their first tri have once they find out they are pregnant.

    Just sayin....

  • Ask your OB.  Chances are she'll roll her eyes - you have a better chance of getting sick or the baby getting sick from SOOOOO many other things.  I've never avoided lunch meat.
  • No, that was one of the first things my OB told me, was not to eat lunch meat. It has been hard for me, I have been craving a turkey sub all pregnancy. As soon as this baby is born a turkey sub will be one of my first meals. :)
  • I have eaten Subway a couple of times during my pregnancy. But, I have never really been a person to eat deli meat for lunch, so I really haven't had any besides those handful of trips to Subway.
  • I eat an Italian sub from Jimmy Johns once a week!!!
  • I haven't eaten it as much as I usually do, but I have definitely had deli meat throughout my pregnancy. Most of the time it is heated, but a few times it was cold. I am still alive and do not have listeria.

  • I ate it as much as I wanted and did just fine... unless someone wants to blame PTL on lunch meat....................

BTW, you can get lysteria from your kitchen counter.

  • I asked my doctor about this when I first got pregnant and he told me that as long as I am not getting my deli meat in a third world country it is fine. I specifically asked about Subway, Quiznos, and Mr. Goodcents, he said that they were all fine.
  • I eat whatever I want just like my mom did and just like my grandmother did.

  • I love Subway.  I don't think I could have made it this far without Subway!!  Hmmm...hubby might be making a Subway run for me!
  • I eat a sandwich with deli meat at least 4 times a week and have done so my entire pregnancy without any problems.
  • of course! i eat pretty much anything too!! like PP!  i love subway deli meat, i never get anything toasted or heated, just eat it fresh.!!  Enjoy being Pg!!
  • For the most part I have avoided it, but I have had a couple sandwiches at home and microwaved the meat until it was steaming then put it into the freezer for a couple minutes to cool it down and then ate it. I figure it is a small sacrifice for LO. I will tell you though that I will be having subway very soon after baby is bornBig Smile
  • I eat it, I just don't go overboard.  And if you heat it up, you're even better off.
  • I eat deli sandwiches all the time. Do what you feel is right for you.
  • I have been told this several times.  But I still eat Subway... lots!  I just get the roasted chicken breast.  I still eat deli meat at home sometimes, I just heat it up first.  I read that if you heat it to boiling before you eat it, it kills the preservatives and you don't have to worry about listeria.  I have also heard the same thing about hot dogs... My doc hasn't told me this but I have just stayed away from it to be on the safe side!

  • I ate a sub once.  I have had salami but on panini's where it was warmed up.  Too much of a risk.
  • I love my deli sandwiches! I just make sure to zap the meat in the microwave before I eat it. I'm sure someone at subway would do this for you...
  • I eat it all the time.
  • It is true.  My OB said once in a while from a reputable place like Subway or Quizno's is fine.  I always get mine toasted which puts my mind at ease.  Enjoy your sub :)

  • I have avoided it completely...I would eat deli meat heated to steaming but honestly that sounds so gross.

My OB told me to avoid it - as well as all other foods/places you can get listeria. She's a better safe than sorry person and so am I.

But, I know lots of people that eat deli meat when they are pregnant and are fine. I know that doesn't mean you don't get sick from it, just that they were lucky and the meat they ate didn't have listeria.

  • Bring on SUBWAY!!!  Thats sounds good but I am making Cinn. Style Chili tonight!!!  Maybe Friday for lunch.
  • I've only been to Subway once this pregnancy, but I've gone to Firehouse a lot...I just make sure to order the hot sandwiches and ask them to steam the meat really good.  It's safe if you do that.
  • Hell yeah I eat it. I don't have it much just because it's not convenient to me but I haven't been too phased by the lunch meat thing.

  • I eat a ham sandwich almost everyday for lunch.  My Dr. gave me restrictions and deli meat was not on the list.

  • I eat it whenever the desire hits.  I had food poisoning last time with DS and while it sucked I still eat the particular dish that caused it.  I just ask for it well done.  I, however, am not cooking my lunchmeat as I think that is incredibly disgusting.
