? for those who popped stitches....

I had an episiotomy which ended up tearing as well.  (I didn't find out about my 4th degree tear until the day we were discharged though...great communication huh?)  Anyways, I'm wondering what it feels like when you pop stitches?

Possibly TMI but I had my first 'real' post-partum poop yesterday and it HURT and I'm still very sore and it hurts to go to the bathroom.  Because I'm still bleeding I can't tell if I am bleeding from my stitches area.  It was a burning pain yesterday and today its sore and feels slightly burning sensations when I am going to the bathroom....Any ideas?  I'll be calling the dr's office tomorrow morning but was hoping to get some idea if its stitches or something else....TIA

Re: ? for those who popped stitches....

  • I tore my stitches and it hurt worse than anything else to pee.  To the point of almost making me pass out from the burning and stinging.  It had been this way since I had given birth but it was getting worse but I thought it was just normal pains that I needed to learn to deal with. I was to the point of holding it as long as I possibly could so that it wouldn't hurt.

  • I had third degree ep and didn't pop my stitches. That said it hurt so badly to poop. I had to take stool softners for four weeks and had to take suppositories on two different occasions. I would take a suppository before I went to the bathroom in pain. Not the most pleasant thing to experience but it worked for me. It has now been almost six weeks pp and I feel totally fine now. Hope this helps...good luck!
  • I have 4th degree tearing as well...and pooping is no fun.  Do they have you on stool softeners?  I swear the softener is not working for me...I may need to up the dosage.  Did they give you a Sitz Bath? After pooping, you should use the sitz bath - it may soothe the area as well as help clean it......

I did lose a stitch so far - but I saw it on the TP as I padded.  I would still call your doc and just see what they say...

    GL!!

  • I did not pop stitches, I tore them out, and made the tear longer. It was painful, but not as bad as I would have expected. I finally took a mirror and looked.

DO not make DH check! I learned that the hard way. He is still in therapy for that one!! (J/K)

My OB said it is normal for some stitches to come out as you were swollen when they put them in, and as the swelling receedes, they become looser.

  • My stitches are long gone and pooping is still difficult at times. Hemmies are still common from the stress of pushing so maybe it's that?
