Help! Toddler poop problem. TMI

DD2 is 17 months old and having poop issues. She hasn't had a BM in 2 days, which is unusual for her. She usually goes 1-2 times per day. She finally started to go this afternoon, but she screamed and cried for a minute or so and barely got any out. My first thought was that she could be constipated, but the poop seems fairly soft, although the consistency does seem a little harder than what's normal for her. She's tried three more times this evening and it's been the same thing each time- screaming and crying with a small piece of poop. So what is this? Is she constipated? I always associated that with hard poop not soft. Have any of you experienced this?

  • Sounds like constipation to me.  Esp if it's harder for what her normal BMs are.  I'd give her water and juice.

  • constipation is awful, isn't it? things that have worked for us: suppositories, warm baths, exercise...and always making sure he is hydrated and (for a toddler) has fruits and veg...I feel awful when it hurts him so much!!!
  • It does sound like constipation.  I would try to increase fluid intake ...orange juice, apple juice.  Also, any fresh fruits or veggies will help ...apple slices, mandarin oranges, sweet potatoes.  Try to stay away from constipating foods until BM's become normal again... bananas, cheese, yogurt and decrease milk intake.  Hope your little girl starts feeling better!

  • DS has always been a little constipated.  We give him miralax 1 tsp every day or every other day.  You can check with the dr if it's ok to give since she's younger than my DS.  We started it at 3 yrs old.
