Libby's Pumpkin Puree as baby food?

So I'm trying to figure out what else I can introduce to DD.  I was rooting through my cabinet and saw a can of Libby's Pumpkin puree.  I was going to make pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving, but someone beat me to it.  Anyway, the only ingredient in it is.....pumpkin.  Sounds pretty safe, right?

I was going to water it down some because it's pretty thick, but would you use this for baby food?  This sounds a lot easier than buying a pumpkin, cutting it, cooking it, pureeing it, etc....  In reality, I'm just super lazy!  Thanks.

  • Can you send me a pumpkin pie? No one ever makes them in our family anymore

    :(:(

  • Absolutely. I'm neurotic and only served DS the middle part that wasn't up against the can lining.

  • I asked this a few weeks ago and I got mixed answers. So, my cans of pumpkin still sit on my shelf. I plan to ask the pedi next week at Oliver's next appointment.

  • Canned pumpkin is fine (canned pumpkin pie filling is not, obvs.)

My DS had some for dinner last night.  He loved it!

  • I have. I bought organic canned from Whole Foods. I didn't even water it down, but he does like his purees thicker. IMO it's like applesauce - why do all that work when Someone's done it for you already!

  • Yes, it is fine. I gave this to DD and she loved it. I didn't water it down at all either.

  • Yep - works just fine.  I even freeze it in ice cube trays just like any other food I make for DS.  When I put them in a dish for daycare I will add a little cinnamon sometimes to give him a bit of spice.

I also gave him pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving - oh, the horror.

  • Absolutely. I looked it up on wholesomebabyfoods.com and they said you CAN serve it right out of the can, freeze it etc. They said it is fully cooked and okay for babies as long as it is the pumpkin and not the pie mix. Also if you peel back the label on the pumpkin can, it says it can be enjoyed out of the can without cooking as well.

  • Absolutely, no thinning necessary.

  • I have wondered about that as well...  I have not given my LO any pumpkin from a can because of the BPA issue.  Most cans are lined with BPA, which leaches into the food.  Acidic foods are especially prone to BPA contamination.  I have looked at all the cans at my local organic/ health food store and none of them say BPA free... so I have decided to err on the side of caution and either make my own pumpkin or not give him pumpkin!  I know that the chance of the BPA harming him is small, but I am a little paranoid:)
