3rd Trimester

Anyone eat sushi this late in pregnancy?

My birthday is coming up and we always celebrate my birthday and Valentines (combined) at this upscale Sushi restaurant downtown.  I have an appt on Tuesday so I'll ask my OB her thoughts on it but wanted to see if anyone else has eaten sushi at this point.

  • And I mean real sushi...not the cooked rolls.

this is the key part-  go for it!

  • My Dr assured me that as long as I'm not eating a ton of raw fish and that I'm eating from a reputable establishment that eating the raw stuff really isn't that bad. They are mostly concerned about complications arising from getting sick (bad fish) or the mercury content in the fish. I choose fish with low mercury levels and just eat a couple of pieces to satisfy my craving (as I don't eat the cooked rolls either!)
  • I've snuck a few real rolls in here and there... but only from really reputable places.
  • I have had and plan to have more sushi (yes, raw).  Last time I was there, I ran into my pregnant midwife enjoying the same.  I will say I feel really cautious and haven't had a TON and have tried to focus on the non-raw goodies when I have gone.  I do trust the restaurants I visit, but I figure it helps reduce the risk.
  • Did it.

    Loved it.

    Might even do it again.

  • Yes. I avoided it in 1st tri but we generally go out or make it at home 3-4x a month.
  • I wouldn't even hesitate.  It's not like you're going to a street vendor.  Eat up and have fun!
  • 3rd tri would be your best time to splurge, so I heard. They say because DC has done the percentage of his growing by now. It is recommended that you go to a reputable place and sit at the bar. We never sit at the bar, but they suggest this in order to see the cook preparing the roll. I guess so you can shout "keep that shark away from my salmon"...Stick out tongue
  • I went a couple weeks ago, and will go again next week with co-workers to celebrate my birthday and the new baby.  I am 37w1d, if it makes a difference.

  • I love sushi; I lived in Japan and lived off of sushi.  However, I do not trust those preparing sushi or sashimi enough to eat it while pregnant.  I agree that the chances of contracting a parasite are low and that if you avoid high mercury level fish, https://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/sushimercury.htm, the baby is okay.  I'm worried about food poisoning from cross contamination and mishandling either when fish arrived in the U.S. (fish is not subject to federal inspection like red meat and poultry) or at the restaurant.

If you do go, sit at the bar and touch the glass of the refrigerator to make sure its cold and observe those preparing to make sure they don't cross contaminate by not washing their hands, using the same dirty surfaces over and over again, using the same surfaces raw meat or poultry was on, etc.

  • I never stopped eating it.. I only eat at high quality places and dont expect bad fish from them.

    Anabell.

Where do you go for sushi?  We're looking for a good sushi place out in the suburbs and haven't found anything we like yet.

  • i've eaten raw oysters.
  • I would totally do it if the one place I really trust wasn't so damn far away.
