My dog hurt my feelings

So DH brought home ribs for lunch and I gave the skinny end to Oscar (our dog) thinking he would just clean the meat off the bone. Well he starts crunching it all up like it's a treat and eating it whole and I am freaking out thinking he's going to choke or get a bowel obstruction. So I told him to "leave it!" and he did not drop it, so I tried to pull it out of his mouth and he started growling and fvcking bit me! He has never done anything mean or aggresive like that before. My hand hurts and but my feelings are more hurt than anything. I literally cried for 5 minutes afterwards. I am a pregnant emotional mess.

Don't feel sensitive, when it comes to bones and meat, dogs sometimes lose their heads, however, he needs to be given a harsh 'NO' correction because it is not OK that he does that.

  • I so would've done the same thing if my Basset did that to me. She did snarl at me one day because I spanked her for getting into the trash. I told DH "Oh great, Marlowe and I aren't speaking right now!" Dogs are so naughty sometimes.

  • I felt the same way when my dog snapped at me a few months ago, before I was pregnant.  It bothered me more than I expected it to.
  • I've never tried to get things out of my dogs' mouths that they really want.  That's just asking to get bitten.

Usually I do a bait and switch.  I give them something they want more than what they have.  Usually a squeaky toy.

I tried the bait and switch with his fav toy. He wanted nothing more than that rib! At least he chewed it up good.

  • funny story: i also have a little pug named oscar. we brought him a rib bone from supper that was 4 inches long.. and he swallowed it whole! i freaked out and brought him to the vet thinking that he would die if it poked through his stomach or something.... they took an x-ray and said there was nothing they could do, just to watch him. so i spent freaking $200 at 1 a.m at the emergency vet, and the stupid dog ended up dissolving it with no problems. i know it's mean, but for that kind of money, i wish he would have been just a LITTLE uncomfortable.

  • First off that sucks and I am so sorry. I know this may sound a bit less than supportive, but don't give him bones!! Even though there wasn't a problem, bones are not good for dogs, having had to remove several from various locations in the GI tract of dogs (and cats) don't feed them bones EVER.

As far as him biting you, it's not just that he wanted it. That is not ok. I would be furious at my dog if she ever tried anything like that regardless of what it is. Figuring out why it happened and putting a stop to it now is important!!! especially with a baby on the way, what happens when your child is playing with your dog?

You have excellent points. This is the first time he has showed that type of behavior towards me. He got a GOOD pop on the nose and he saw me crying and started sulking. He knew he did something wrong. I am still just astounded that he did that.
