Ikea poang chair instead of a glider? (PIP)

Does anyone have this rocking chair in their nursery? I really hate the look of traditional gliders, and we want a more modern look for our nursery. I also don't want to spend $300 on it!

Just curious if anyone else looked at it, or has bought it. I haven't actually tried it out in person, yet.

  • I totally thought the same thing. They look great and are comfortable, BUT they aren't easy to get out of. I tried them out and couldn't imagine trying to get up with a baby in my arms.

  • I actually have this chair at home in the non-rocking version, and it's really not that comfortable. The only time anyone sits in it is when we have lots of people over and there isn't seating left on the couch or other chairs. I would give it a thumbs down.
  • Thanks girls...I appreciate the advice! I may just have to go to Ikea and check it out for myself, but I definitely want something that's going to be comfy.

  • we bought a regular non-rocking poang chair instead of a glider. I actually didn't like the rocker. the rock was too fast in my opinion. i like the gentle rock/bounce of the regular poang.
  • I was thinking of going that route too. I like the looks of this better than traditional glider, the price, and the size is nice for small spaces. I agree though, they are difficult to get out of and that is something to consider with baby and especially if you had to have c/s. Ikea also has a more padded rocker, the Lillberg rocker in neutral/white and black. The cushions seem like they'd be easy to cover, although you are still dealing with that low to ground issue.

  • I had to have help getting out of this chair in the store when I was 29 weeks pregnant.  I thought it was pretty comfortable, but it was such a struggle getting out of it!

  • We have the traditional Poang chair (not the rocker) and I loved it for giving DD a slight bounce (she preferred that to rocking) when she was an infant.

  • My parents had these in the "family room" of our house.  They weren't bad comfort-wise (not as comfy as a glider IMO though) but I definitely agree with the pp that they're not super easy to get out of since the seat is tilted back slightly.

  • I was just at Ikea today and tried out that same chair.  I hated it!  I would rather have no rocker/glider than to have that one.
  • I agree with PPs. This chair isn't the worst chair on the planet, but it's definitely not "fall asleep" comfortable. And it is tough to get out of.

I know you said you didn't want to spend $300, but unless you find something on craigslist, you may have to compromise. Take it from someone who is super duper picky about the glider situation. I found this one at Urban Outfitters that came closest to good price + good looks. I just wasn't sure about buying something like that without sitting in it first -- although they do free returns.

DH and I just broke down and spent almost $1400 on our nursery glider/ottoman. I hope it's worth it!!!

  • They are so hard to get out of! I have to put a pillow in it and I still struggle.

Ours is on a hardwood floor and it has been known to "dump" people out of it. Like, if they are too close to the edge and reach to get something, the chair flips.

We plan on replacing it before the baby comes.

  • We just got the non-rocker one. I hated all the glider and rocking chair options. I think it is comfy. Maybe not as much as a glider, but I couldn't bring myself to purchase one.
