DS1 is 3 years 1 month. I tried to start training him early fall, but he had no interest, so I stopped for a couple of months. I tried to start back up again in the beginning of December, but I wasn't consistent b/c we were always on the go with holiday events/parties/shopping etc. Too hectic. So we started again yesterday. I decided to do a sticker chart, which he loved. and after each time he peed, I gave him a few Skittles. At the end of so many times of peeing/stickers, i told him we would go to Target to pick out a treat. Well, yesterday, he peed 5 times and stayed dry all day! My problem is that he is now obsessed with the Skittles. Like, he will pee, we dump the potty, wash hands, he eats his Skittles and then he jumps right back on the potty and then FREAKS, I mean has a royal melt down, b/c he can't pee again. This happened all day yesterday, a few times today (only b/c he had preschool part of the day). Tonight we went out to dinner, and he had ice cream for desert. Came home and said, actually demanded, that he wanted a lolly pop and then he was going to sit on the potty. I told him if he pees, he's not getting any food/candy, he'd get a big hug and I'd chase him around the house- I had to think quick!
So, in a nutshell- I don't think he cares about using the potty as much as he does the candy, but it's the only thing that motivates him, as I have been trying off and on for several months now, and just started the Skittle rewards. What do you use as rewards? Or should I start by not giving him a reward everytime he pees? Or is he too early in the game to not be rewarded each time? Maybe I need to make a trip to the $ store for more prizes? Please help, I just want to do the right thing without turning him into a complete candy freak. he's on his way now.
Re: I created a potty training monster. Help.
I used the m&m thing just so he got the hang of it and when the jar ran out, no more.
Use the sticker chart but increase it by one or two every time he completes it. To get my boy to poop in the potty over the summer, we started out with 2 poops=ice cream at Brusters (free kids cone). Then when he did that, he had to have 3, then 4, then 5, then after we got to either 6 or 8 (don't remember) we kind of "forgot" to put stickers on and it faded away.
We are using one now for staying dry during naps/night b/c those are the only times he uses a diaper. He chooses a Thomas train after he gets 8 drys (it was 5 for a while but all the sudden he was waking up dry a lot so we moved it to 8).
