Success after IF

You gals were right - mastitis. And Sam's circ.

Today was Sam's circ and I cried the ENTIRE time.  The PA who did it said that most parents wait in the lobby while she does the procedure, but we figured that if he had any other medical procedure we would be there.  It was brutal.  I am neutral on circ - I can see both sides of the argument - so I let DH make the call. He watched everything and Sam sucked on his finger the whole time, but of course he just screamed.  I know he was anesthetized, but who knows if was crying from pain or from the restraints.  UGH. Everything went fine, he has no bleeding, and now he is way asleep, but I'm still recovering!!

Since we were at the OB's office, I asked to be seen to check out my breasts.  The left one has mostly improved, but the right one is now bright red, hot and painful.  I've had daily fever spikes since Sunday.  The PA took one look at it and said "that's mastitis".  So, 10 days of keflex.

Now that I know relief is on the way, I am so excited! I also have a refill for another 10 day course if it returns.

Regarding probiotics to ward off thrush, the PA recommended yogurt daily.  I've never had a YI due to antibiotics, but want to be extra careful for Sam.  Any recs on probiotic enriched foods or supplements?

Thanks ladies!!

  • Oh, and by the way - we have good friends who are coming over on Saturday (our landlords, oddly enough!), and M actually had a circ in the seventh grade. Honestly that was one reason I was OK with doing it now - I couldn't imagine the discomfort if he wanted to have it done later.  Ouch!

  • So sorry about the screaming and the mastitis, so glad you got some antibiotics.  I've only ever just eaten yogurt and that's done me good.  I'd hope that would be enough but I'm pretty sure someone can give you some recs for some additional supplements.

  • DEFINITELY do probiotics, start taking them without delay - both you and Sam will be at risk for thrush once you're on antibiotics - and it can be a BIITCH to get rid of once it settles in.

I like culturelle - you can buy them at CVS or Walgreen's - supplement section.  I'd take a probiotic AND eat yogurt daily.  And make sure you let your nipples air dry after each bf'ing session.

    Feel better E!

    Wheee!

  • I eat yogurt almost daily and I take an acidophilus supplement daily. I think they really help - I'm prone to yeast infections.

  • I'm so glad to hear your getting relief for your mastitis.  It sounded really painful!

  • Hi. My ds had his circ done today as well.  :(   My DH couldn't go so I asked my bro to go w/ me but it didn't matter b/c they wouldn't let us in no matter what.  I sat in the waiting room totally panicked thinking about what he's going through.  I'm neutral too...actually, more on the non-circ side.... but let DH decide what he wanted.   We had it done at a urologists office, not my OB (she won't do them).  They used a pediball (?) for the circ. He has a plastic piece on his little member that will fall off in 10 days.  I hate looking at it.

Anyway, glad to hear everything is OK.  I drink kefir for my probiotics.  It's good to make a smoothie with.  It tastes like a thin yogurt.

  • So sorry on both counts! Re: the circ, Toodle had his done by a urologist at a month old due to some webbing (the pedi didn't want an OB doing it since it was a little more complicated) and we weren't even given the option of being there - in fact, they told us to leave altogether and walk around the hospital so we wouldn't hear him. :( Poor guy. I'm glad Sam's doing ok now though. For the first day or so after I was so guilty we did it but in retrospect, now I'm glad it's done.

As for the mastitis, hope it clears up very soon! Great idea to ward off thrush, I didn't even know it was caused by antibiotics and after a 10 day course for each of us we're dealing with thrush (albeit a mild case) now. No fun.

  • hey, hope you're feeling better soon!  I had no rpblems with thrush but I did get my first ever YI on meds for mastitis.  It was only a rash in my armpit, but it sucked.  I would highly recommend some probiotics.  I use florestor for dd whenever she is on anti-b's.

    GL!
