Pregnant after a Loss

My salicylic acid nightmare continues...

So this morning I took a look at my moisturizer. I use the tiniest bit on mornings my skin feels really dry. I had no idea before looking up saliylic acid last night that alpha hydroxy was the same thing.... and of course, the moisturizer has it, with active ingredients of octinoxate and oxybenzone.

I not only feel like a complete idiot, but am seriously having anxiety issues over here. :(

This is not good... for a mom who has already lost a child to a series of congenital birth defects to realize the products she has been using can cause birth defects.... ugh.

Ok... talk me down again...Sad

  • I have to guess that it's just a trace amount that is in there I would think?  I think that your little one will be just GREAT!  I would tell you not to worry but I usually tend to over worry so I know it's hard! Maybe you could call your dr. and ask? Hearing from him/her might make you feel better? ((hugs))

  • Here is a link to an article on babycenter. It says AHAs are safe to use during pregnancy. I don't think they are the same as salicylic acid.Sorry I don't know how to make it clicky. I'm sure you're just fine!

  • Isn't salicyclic acid very similar to aspirin? And aren't like half of us here taking baby aspirin? I'm sure the trace amounts you're putting on your skin are nowhere near the amount in a baby aspirin.

  • What I can tell you is that I (and a lot of us on here, it seems) am taking baby aspirin daily, religiously, to ensure blood flow through the placenta.  It's 81 mg, straight into my gut.  I don't miss a pill because I am terrified of NOT taking it, that I will lose my baby to a blood clot in the placenta.

So...I'd say the eensy-teensy amount absorbed by your system from your skin is probably safe, and I'd EVEN go so far as to say (not meanly at all) that the anxiety is probably the worst part of this, rather than the AHA itself.

Eliana will be okay.  Everything you've seen on ultrasound has been healthy so far, and you have done an amazing job caring for her.

  • I am just lurking from TTCAL....but my job is working with skin in a physician owned medical spa...Most ob's are ok with pregnant women using aha's (alpha hydroxy acid)-its very mild.  The active ingredients are mostly sunscreens.  So, I am sure you and baby are fine!!

  • FWIW, my doc says saly acid is not good but alpha hydroxy, glycolic and lactic acids are okay.

  • I'm just lurking, but I really wanted to offer you support.  My OB's philosphy on this was more liberal and she pretty much felt than anything I could buy OTC at CVS was going to be fine.  I had horrible, terrible, raging acne when I was PG and I definitely used the Neutrogena acne cream every single day.  DD and I are both fine.

On a separate, but related side note, I had an interesting discussion with my OB about taking a prescription medication I needed when BFng.  My PCP didn't want to prescribe it, but my OB did.  Basically, my OB said that in addition to no one doing studies on pregnant/nursing women, that in order for drug companies to change labels to indicate safety for use with these populations that they need to apply to the FDA for that and that there is little financial incentive for them to do so, which is why they don't.  That's why very few medications fall into the lowest risk categories.  It gave me a different perspective on looking at some of the information you can find on the internet about how safe things are.
