baby monitors help burglars?

So, my Dh and I have been talking about getting a video monitor since after the baby comes the girls will be sharing a room (well, they'll start sharing in about 7-8 months, because we'll have Annabelle with us in our room first) and after the conversation about it the other day, I started talking with him about it more and he apparently has done some of his own research on it. So, it sounds like the wireless options are the best space wise for us, but the downside is that - and like other people mentioned - ?its easy for people to pick up on your feed (non video or video alike), and dh said he found information saying that burglars have discovered this too. They'll buy a?wireless-radio?receiver, or the baby video monitor, and go by people's houses/apartments with their monitor on to try to case people's houses, and eavesdrop?on their conversations to find out more information before burglarizing, etc. ?Kind of sceeved me out, so I thought I'd share just in case others hadn't heard about this ye. The article I was reading was saying of course still use them, but remember not to leave the monitors more than necessary. If they are only on while baby is sleeping, then they can't hear anything, but if you forget to turn them off (and apparently a lot of people do), they can pick up on your every conversation. . .

Re: baby monitors help burglars?

  • Oh wow. That's good to know.

Our house is small enough that we have a monitor, but likely will only use it if we're also watching a movie or are sitting on one of the porches.

Mostly I got it because it's got a handy thermometer that changes color to let you know if the temp is a good one for baby. (and mommy, who is always cold)

I'll definitely share this info with husband, though, so he doesn't just leave it on all the time.

  • Very interesting.  Thanks for the reminder!

  • Our monitor is only in DS's room. We don't hang out in there unless we are putting him to bed and we don't discuss our home/outings while we there. When we're not, there's nothing to hear & pick-up. The receivers are just one way.

If your house is setup in a similar fashion, I don't think it will be a problem for you either.

  • That's definitely something to think about. I just purchased a digital video monitor, which is WAY more secure (if not fully secure.) It's the same type of technology that the newest cordless phones use for privacy.

(And it's the Summer Infant Best View monitor.)

  • Oh, but FWIW, the audio monitor we currently use isn't as secure and we leave it on 24/7. As Ava mentioned, we're never in there anyway.

Yeah, thats the one we're looking into getting now (after reading your post). It sounds great, especially now that we're transition Eleanor to a "big girl" bed, and she'll have free reign of the room. . . Smile?

I agree with this, I have WAY bigger things to worry about than someone randomly walking by my house with a baby monitor receiver and casing my house.  But for that matter we leave the door unlocked often and *gasp* even have left the garage door open.

Yeah, its not a problem for us either (since we don't actually use any kind of monitor right now), but there are people out there like my BIL and SIL who do the same thing, except their house is SO small, that when they leave their daughters room open with the monitor on, it picks up everything they say, so they just turn their volume down on the?receiver?so they don't hear the echo - but don't actually turn it all the way off (on theirs the volume switch?is connected with turning it off, so it could just be a lazy thing of not turning it all the way to the off spot since it takes an extra click). ?

I worry about the same thing!  Or leaving the washing machine on while I am gone will flood the house, the clothes dryer will burn down the house, etc etc.

And while the findings about the baby monitor may be true, I bet the percentage is so small that it isn't really something you need to worry about.

So true! I just had never realize that it was even a possibility - which is what weirded me out the most, not that I'm really worried about it at all, ?just kinda creeped me out that it could be used that way if someone really wanted to.

  • Just to let you know that I was playing around with our baby monitor and heard a convo of a mom and her child so it is possible even when you are not trying to overhear. It made me stop using it. Not to mention that our DD can scream loud enough so no monitor is needed. :)
