Sippy cup advice (LONG)

So the Dr said to start putting formula in N's sippy cup. This way when we start WCM in a few months we can put that in a sippy cup and make the transistion easy (hopefully) other wise he might think "Uh no, Mom milk belongs in a bottle".

I know he is only 9 1/2 months so I shouldn't be all "Oh my gosh!  he's still on a bottle!".  I'm pretty sure he won't take a bottle to preschool in a few years (at least I hope not).   Let me tell you what I've started doing and tell me what you think.

I'm not sure DS has actually gotten the hang of the cup yet.  We practice everyday.  I put water in it and hand it to him after his cereal in the AM and after his Stage 2 foods in the PM.   Not sure how much he gets out of it before he bangs it around and drops it.

As for the formula, for one bottle a day I put that same amount in a sippy cup.  The only problem is he doesn't hold his own bottle and doesn't want to hold the sippy cup.  so I end up sitting there cuddling with him.  if I try to get him to hold it on his own he gets mad.   So today I put him on the floor and handed him the cup of formula.  He took it and just chewed on the spout.  He knows there is something in there since 5 minutes before we were sitting on my lap and he was drinking it.  We use Nuby's.

Should I continue doing what I am doing? (Replace a bottle with a sippy but still sit with him in my arms) Should I go back to all bottles and maybe try again next month?  But then wouldn't that send the message "Hey if I wait long enough and not hold my sippy cup Mommy will hold me and give it to me".

Why all this pressure to be off bottles by age 1?  I never heard of this til recently.  I thought 18 months or 2 yrs was the norm (but what did I know? I didn't have a child).

Re: Sippy cup advice (LONG)

  • I will say that I had this conversation with my pedi yesterday and she does not push being off the bottle at 12months.  Yea!

She did say just don't let them walk around with a bottle or go to sleep w/a bottle.

She said 18m is more like it and told me her son isn't the best with a sippy ucp even at 18m now.  I love her.

Anyway, my daycare wanted him off his sippy cup in his new toddler room (so before 1) and he is so not there.  So he still gets bottles sent to class, although they practice w/him too.  He drinks a little and we've been practicing FOREVER.  We let him hold a sippy cup when he could so maybe 4 months and starting earlier didn't help.  :)  I just wanted to say that my DS is almost 1 and is not proficient with the sippy cup.  I know others on here have that, but each baby is different.

  • We taught her how to use sippies with water.  We didn't start putting breastmilk in sippies until she was eating actual meals.  We would give her cups of milk at meal time and still do bottles in the morning and night.

Eventually she took a preferance for the sippy and didn't want bottles anymore.  We had no issues making the transition to milk being cold.  We never heated the sippies, took the chill off at first, but never heated.

    Good luck.

  • My kiddos have held their own bottles for a long while (a twin thing, I think).  If he's not holding his bottle, I wouldn't even bother with the cup yet for formula.  He's still young.  I offered mine water in cups every day for practically forever before they finally started drinking it.  Everyone told me the cups would just click one day, and that's exactly what happened.  Then, once they were drinking water, I started introducing the formula.  This has really only happened over the last few weeks.

For my own reasons, I'd really like to be bottle-free by their 1st birthday.  But I don't see any actual need for it.  I just don't like washing them!  :)  I say, he will drink from the cup when he's ready and there is probably nothing you can do to rush him.  So don't stress over it.  Keep offering it and eventually he'll be interested enough to pick it up and try it.

  • I think that formula and milk taste very different and wouldn't be confusing...  That being said, I did it totally differently and it went well (but slowly).  When she was a year old (we were a little delayed b/c of her prematurity) I started giving her milk in a sippy at meals and formula in bottles.  As she started to get the hang of the sippy and drinking more milk, I faded out the bottles.  It took a few months until she was completely off the bottles but we didn't have any transition issues...
  • I think it is good to hope to be off by 18 months, but I don't see being off BY 12 months as a big deal. My pedi didn't even start asking me about it till his 12 month appt (but DS never took a bottle anyway).

Brighton didn't get the sippy cup thing until like 10.5 months. I hardly even tried, I'd put it on his tray, but that was it.  Then one day he just picked it up and started using it.

I say don't stress too much, he'll get it when he's ready.

Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • Okay so if he usually gets a bottle of formula around 12/12:30 should I NOT put that in a sippy cup instead?  Just go back to putting it in a bottle and maybe revisit this in a month when he is 10 months?

OR maybe when I start him on 3 meals a day in a few weeks I can give him his sippy cup of formula after his lunch in his highchair.

I think you should keep giving him his bottle like normal and then doing the sippy with meals.  You could put formula or water in it.. whatever you want (we started with water and upgraded to soy at 11 months .. ds is allergic to dairy)

  • Jacob is quite proficient at using a sippy cup at and in between meals.  He only drinks water from it.  When we tried putting in formula, he wanted no parts of it.  I hope that he likes WCM in a sippy because that's all he's getting.  I'm going to try it again when he turns 10 months.
