Overeating? Eating too fast? Advice please!

I feed pumped breastmilk and also supplement more than half of his diet with formula. LO has always eaten a lot (he gained weight the first week, and has never lost weight), but recently he seems to overeat. He's about 2.5 wks now.

He seems to want a bottle to calm himself, but then he'll spit up every bit of what he eats over 3 or 3.5 oz. One night he ate 6 oz in a two or three hour period (waking and sleeping every 30 min or so) and spit up half of it. We offer a paci instead, but he doesn't want it.

I think he is going through a growth spurt right now, but he sure seems to be overeating a lot. He also eats so quickly that he chokes. We have the level one, slow nipples, so I don't think it's a problem with the bottles. I'm not sure if we should let him continue to eat when and however much he wants.

Suggestions please?

  • That does seem like a lot to eat. Have you talked to your pediatrician about it? DD gets expressed breastmilk, and just yesterday I started offering 3 oz instead of 2.5. She just seemed like she was still hungry after she ate. She did only eat 2.5 oz during one of her feedings last night. Oh and she is about the same age as your LO, she's a little over 9lbs (8 lbs 13 oz at birth).
  • I was hoping to see more answers. I'm having the same issue.  I have been mostly formula feeding and breastfeed about 3 times a day. Lately, it seems she is always hungry.  At 8:30am I fed her 3 oz and then at 9:30 she was crying and trying to eat her hand, so I offered her another 2 oz and she ate it all!!  Yikes!  I am thinking about calling the pedi to ask how much is too much, but if she's crying and giving me hunger signals, what am I supposed to do??  My DD was 8lbs 6oz at birth and at 12 days she was up to 9lbs 10 oz!  She'll be 3 weeks tomorrow.
  • I have been exclusively breast feeding but introduced the bottle of expressed milk last night  because i am returning to work in 6 wks. My pedi said to give 2 oz, burp her, then offer 2 more. She is a bit older than your LO, but seems like it should be about the same. I would def talk to the doctor if you are concerned.
