I think it's his cold that keeps waking him up every hour or two. He just screamed and cried the last time, so he's in his swing right now. We weren't getting anywhere with me holding him.
I just keep thinking that we need to hit a point where we can start sleep-training, but he's got to feel better first. I can't help thinking that if we had done this earlier, he probably would have been better at comforting himself when he woke up with the cold. Argh. Until then, I guess neither one of us gets sleep? My DH doesn't seem to be much help with this (he never gets up in the middle of the night with DS).
Re: Hasn't slept more than 2 hours straight all night...
I'm sorry that he's feeling so bad! Hopefully the cold will be better soon! Have you tried putting Vicks on the soles of his feet? I do that whenever DD is congested and it seems to really help her breathe at night.
As far as the sleep training, we're in the same boat. DD isn't sick but we think she's about to start teething hard-core and I don't know if it's an appropriate time to start. I really wish I would have started sooner. I feel like I'm never going to get a good night's sleep again...
We have been battling a cold since Oct that has caused four ear infection. We have tried EVERYTHING and nothing is helping. The problem is that our babies are too young for many medications and they do not know how to blow their little noises to get that yuck out, its really a battle you have to wait out.
Things we have done that help at night is raising part of his crib mattress so it is a a sloop. This helps with drainage. We suction his noise all the time to get that stuff out of there. On nights that it is really bad with him coughing either DH our I camp out in the living room and hold DS upright, which really is not that bad. Baby gets to sleep and so do we.
We have also used a warm mist humidifier to help break that stuff up. We used it at night and during the day it what ever room we were in with DS.
Just keep a look out for ear infections with a cold. They are so common during this time and when your baby has a cold it seems that without fail a ear infection will follow. DS never had a fever with his ear infections or pulled at his ear. His coughing was getting worse so I took him in a sure enough ear infection. Not all babies will pull at ears or run a fever so just keep an eye out for that. Another sign for DS was eating less since sucking on a bottle would hurt his ears.
Best of luck, and tell your DH this is a co-parenting effort and to start helping out.
Thanks for the advice - and it's good to know I'm not in this alone. Also, right after I typed this out, DH came out and took over so I got another bit of sleep.
ETA - oh, and I don't think raising the crib mattress will help - he rolls around so much I think he'd get stuck at one end of the crib!
lol, yes I can understand that. DS starts off at the top and with out fail in the morning he is at the bottom, but its such a slight incline that him reaching the bottom is not that big of a deal. My BFF took a hard flat (a little height to it) pillow and placed in under the crib sheet, but before she put the sheet back down she took I think some other sheet and wrapped in around the pillow and the matters, then put the sheet ontop of it all. This created a raised area, but since the pillow was tied down it had no give, so it was not fluffy. That way when she was on the pillow all was great, but when she went off her mattress was still flat.
