S/O underweight kids, confession

I'm afraid to take Macey to the pedi. ?She hasn't been sick enough to warrant a trip the Dr.s in a few years. ?She only weighs 29 pounds (4.5 years old) and is rail skinny.

She eats as much as any other kid her age and I *know* she is healthy, but I feel paranoid when other people mention how tiny she is. ?

She will need a physical and shots for entrance to kindergarten in the next few months and I'm sort of dreading it.

  • Oh don't feel bad/paranoid about it.  My sister was always a peanut growing up and she still is tiny now.  Her daughter is the same way.  My niece is 6 years old (in 1st grade) and weighs only 35 lbs.  Ds is a moose compared to her.
  • Funny how you dread it now, but in 15 years, you'll be dead jealous of that metabolism.  The healthy weight range is huge.  I'm sure she's fine.  Ignore the comments (if you get any).  Two school-age children already?!  Wowzers.

  • My bil will be 6 in a week and only weighs 35lbs. Every kid is different.
  • Aww, she is tiny but as long as she's eating and is healthy that's all that matters.  My dh has been skinny his whole life too, they just have a super jimmy johns fast metabolism.

I know, I know. ?I love that she's tiny, I can still carry her everywhere.

I'm so ready for her to start school PS is expensive!!?

  • My 4.5 year old is 32 lbs fully clothed but average for height. SKINNY! My DS is 2 and only weighs 23 lbs. Because they've both always been small (not a sudden drop in weight) and meet or exceed other milestones, our Drs are not concerned and neither are we.

This is what I tell other people with small kids: SOMEONE has to be the smallest! Those % charts would be useless (and sort of are anyway) if all the kids were the same weight/height.

However, children should be getting yearly physicals. If she hasnt been to the Dr in "a few years" then they're more likely to be concerned about her weight than if you'd been taking her all along and they could see that it's just her regular growth pattern.

    Take her sooner than later.
