crib mobiles - yea or nay?

I'm having fun playing with my registries, and crib mobiles seem so expensive? Are they necessary? worth it? Any recommended brands? Seems like very few get good reviews on the BRU website. Baby Bargains is not too enthusiastic about mobiles. I don't want people spending money on something that's not necessary.

Re: crib mobiles - yea or nay?

  • I considered an art mobile - something Calder-like but not one that would have hooked to the crib.  For one, our crib rail is too thick.  And two, it seemed unnecessary.  We got a crib mirror instead and DD loves it.

  • Well. . . my opinion is that they are not necessary. . . but I have a singleton, your little ones may spend a bit more time in their cribs while you are tending to siblings.  When Grant is awake (and bright enough) and laying in his crib, he likes to look at his hands and roll around.  Perhaps if he had a mobile in his crib, he'd love it, but he doesn't have one

Honestly, its not something that I would (or did) register for.  There are a lot of other things that you need more.  If someone gives you one (or two or three), great, but not something, at this point, that I would ask for.

    Does that make sense?

  • yes yes and yes. You will need anything you can get your hands on to keep them occupied for 5 minutes here and there! One piece of advice.. do not get the fancy cutesie ones that match the bedding. You need something with bells and whistles and lights! LOL I had the Rainforest one and the Ocean Wonders one. The babies freakin loved both. I also had the Rainforest and ocean wonders crib soothers.. Mirrors, this fish thing that makes bubble sounds.. they still love their crib soothers.
  • I'll second not bothering with ones that match the bedding, get one that has batteries, and DOES NOT WIND, esp. with triplets. I think we got the Rain Forest one with three animals that rotated individually and there was 4 different songs and there was a remote to start it.  I HIGHLY recommend it, especially for you.

  • They aren't necessary but we have both mobiles and crib soothers in their cribs adn they love them both, even at their age now.  If I had to pick one over the other I would definitley pick the crib soothers. We have the rainforest and precieous planet ones.

This....my girls at 18 months STILL love their crib soothers as well! We used the crib mobiles for quick showers, entertainment, diaper changes, etc.

  • We got G one when she was 2.5 months old.  We've used it about a dozen times.....with that said, it served a purpose of letting me put her in the crib and keeping her attention for 10 minutes so I could go put laundry in, go to the bathroom, etc.  And a few times she even fell asleep when it would stop and take a nap.  But it was too stimlating for us to use at bedtime-- but G is easily stimulated and distracted, with three babies you will probably have at least one who will like a mobile.  I say register for one and see how it goes.

  • The cutesie one that matched the bedding was a waste of money for us. I agree with Everafter, though, with multiples it might be worth it to have one of the fancier ones to keep them occupied while you're dealing with others. We had to remove ours once he started pulling up which I think was 9 months-ish (?) Anyway, just wanted to give you an idea of how long you'll be using it....

  • Nay.  Never used it.  I would get an aquarium or crib mirror instead or a crib toy.  I know they make this cute piano they kick with their feet.

  • Ava LOVED hers -- seriously, it allowed me to shower on many, many occasions.  I just got a cheap, wind-up one from Target (it had flowers on it).  I definitely recommend one that winds or somehow turns and plays music.

  • We didn't get them because you have to take them out once they pull up.  Since they are so expensive, it seemed a waste.  We do have the Rainforest soothers though and they LOVE them.  They definitely help get them to sleep.  And now my kiddos will turn theirs on when they wake up in the morning and just watch it.  I will hear the little music start, but it gives me another 10 minutes of extra sleep.  Well worth it!
  • yea!  we had one for our crib and cradle, ds loved it so much! He wasn't a fussy baby at all, but every once in a while he needed extra attention while I was trying to get ready or make dinner etc, and he would stare at that thing forever!

We just got the one that went with our bedding.

Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • Honestly, I have no idea how I'd be able to get by without it.  It's a lifesaver for us.  I can put them in there while dressing, changing, etc another.  Bathroom for me, quick shower, load of laundry, whatever.  I'll eventually get the soother but when all they can do is look up straight, this is the only thing for them at this age.  As far as twins, it's much needed.  I have the ones that go with the bedding, I can hang paper from the ceiling for these kids, they don't care, as long is it moves and makes noise!  So if you want matching, go for it, I don't think it matters.
  • Greyson LOVES his mobile!

We have one on his cradle and I made one for his crib since the rails are to thick for a standard mobile. I got a mobile for the crib at my mother's as well. I got the 2 mobiles at a yard sale for 1.00 (they really wanted to get rid of stuff) and the mobile I made cost me around 25.00.

    They've been a life saver!
