you mean your LO learned to suck her thumb? and you don't want her to? I think it is a great self-soother....

  • Yes exactly...well I'm not sure if I don't want her to. I've heard good and bad things about allowing them to do it - like you said it's a great self-soother...on the other hand it's a hard habit to break. (Case in point...my friend's girlfriend was a thumbsucker and her parents bribed her with her first car to get her to stop...)

So I guess I'm looking for thoughts, opinions, experiences, etc.

  • I think thumb sucking through teenage years is pretty rare!! I say let her do it. But if you don't want her too, try putting something yucky tasting on her thumb like vinegar.

  • I have heard that sucking the thumb is much better than pacifiers for soothing since you don't have to go in and put it in every time it falls out.  Most kids outgrow the habit by themselves when toys become more interesting it is the rare case that that they keep doing it into later life.

    Enjoy!!

  • In my Dr. Sears book it talks about this as being a natural developmental thing.  DD now sticks her fingers/fist in her mouth and I feel once she stops clenching her hands so tight, she'll figure out the thumb part.
