We are a bit behind on this time wise as G is already 6 months, but (unfortunately) she is not even rolling over yet so she isn't mobile but I know that could (hopefully) happen any day now so we need to get on it. I'm reading up on all the guidelines and suggestions but wondering if you all have any tips of your own for babyproofing-- especially toddler moms-- what do you wish you thought of before baby was moving??
We will also be going over to MIL's house next weekend to get her house babyproofed-- a huge undertaking as she is a huge packrat with lots of clutter-- ugh.
TIA!!
Re: Babyproofing 101: Give me your best advice and tips please
we basically proofed the whole main floor, with the exception of the rooms we commonly have the door shut to. (extra bathroom, laundry, etc.)
all plugs covered, cords wrapped or taped up, and any drawer we didn't want her in, we put those simple white latches you have to press down to open.
All poisons and medicines are on the top shelves, regardless of locks.
She has full roam of the main floor, and we never had to say "Ava, out of there" or "put that back" as we removed all those temptations. It makes for a happy house here, and I'm not constantly biching at my kid with negative tones.
We have gates guarding the up and down stairs, the kind you walk thru, not have to hop over, etc.
HTH!
Call your local poison center (national hotline, you will automatically be routed to your local 1 800 222 1222) and request a poison information packet. It includes magnets and stickers for your phone as well as poison prevention information.
You can request to have one sent to your MIL also.
You can get anchors for the tv's too- some anchor to the wall & I also just found some from One Step Ahead that anchor tothe back of the piece of furniture it's on, which I like b/c our console is catty corner & would have a huge long thing attached the wall (plus the hole in the wall, ugh).
You're also supposed to anchor bookshelves to the wall if you have any- I am dreading figuring out how to do this.
Honestly we didn't proof hardly at all for Brighton, but we had so many nieces and nephews that we already sort of lived in a child proof house. I wouldn't say you're behind, you only need to do it when it's time, so if she isn't mobile, you have time
The biggest thing is being able to put things up higher, or be able to close doors to things. My computer is in an armoir in the living room, but it has doors that we have put a child proof lock on so he can't get in. And we have a ladder shelf that has nothing on the bottom two shelves because Bright knocks them off, those are his shelves and he plays with them. I have a telephone stand that is basically empty in the area he can reach because he pulls things out.
I am lucky I have a house with tons of doors, so I can shut him out of many parts of the house throughout the day to avoid minimal damage. But gates would work just as good if you don't have that.
