Baby Names

Evelyn?

Evelyn is ranked 51 on the 2009 most popular baby names on babynames.com and that its gone up over 10 spots.  However I dont know any Evelyns, is Evelyn becoming popular? Do you think it will be the next Olivia, Ava, Emma, etc?

Re: Evelyn?

  • Yeah I do, along with Charlotte, Claire, Nora and Eleanor

maybe not as popular as the Olivias of the world but I feel it is getting up there...

  • I love Evelyn. I think it's a beautiful name. It's classic. It is becoming more popular but I dont know HOW popular.

Yep I agree. I was a little surprised that it has become somewhat popular at least on the boards I have seen it come up. Makes it the "older names" coming back that has its appeal. I like it. It was my great grandmother's name.

  • I just read an article (someone from here posted it) which said Evelyn will be one of the top names in 10 years. I haven't met an Evelyn ever and have never heard of it being used recently except on here. That being said - I LOVE the name and its the name we chose if we have a girl.
  • My newborn niece is Evie. Love it.

  • Yes, but I like it more than most of the popular girl names right now.
  • It will probably make its way up there, but I don't see it being in the top 10.

  • I don't know any baby Evelyns but I know a lot of Evie babies - I think it's such an awesome name

  • The only Evelyn I know is 13.
    I love the name.
  • It is more popular, but I don't see it making it into the top 10. We were going to use is as a FN but decided on MN instead.

  • I agree that the Evelyns I have met IRL are all older women (40s, 50s) but that the name is def going to be more popular among younger generations. Its very sophisticated!
  • I think it is cute.
  • Yep.  In a few years, elemetary schools classes will be all Evelyn, Claire, Sophie/Sophia, Grace, Charlotte, Madeline, and Addison.

I've always really liked Evelyn and thought of using it if we had a girl, but it was just getting too popular (and we had boys anyway!).

  • I love Evelyn. Such a pretty name and it's sort of in the same 'old lady cool' category that a lot of other in-style names are.

  • LOVE it; it was one of our top girl names before we found out we were having a boy.  I don't know anyone IRL with a DD named Evelyn.
  • We know more girls named Evelyn/Evie than those named Olivia.
  • I only know one Evelyn, and she's 14.  but it's definitely getting popular, unfortunately.  I really like it and wanted it on the list, but DH thinks it's too "old lady".  I said, "well, we can call her Evie".  And so Evie is on our list but Evelyn is not.  Because it's getting so popular, I think we'll probably nix it though.

  • My husband is hispanic and his sister's name is Evelia which I think is so pretty.  Maybe you'd like that?
  • All the old fashioned names are coming back in style.  I haven't heard and Evelyn yet but, I can see the apppeal. IMO Evie would be a cute nickname.  We thought of using Louise(Lo-is) and calling her louie(lo-e) after my great aunt.  Spelling may be off.

  • I think Evelyn / "Evie" is lovely.  I'd seriously consider it for a daughter, but a second cousin has a baby Evie.  Hmm...

  • Yes, I think it will, which is unfortunate, obviously it's DDs name, but we chose it in 2007 and it was below 100 then.  Kind of sucks, makes me think you can't win with names when you worry about popularity.
