You, NYE, 1999: a poll of sorts

So, Nesties, what were you up to ten years ago on NYE of 1999?  Where were you living, what were you doing, how did you ring in the New Year?  Is your life where you thought it would be if someone had asked you where you would be by NYE 2009?

Re: You, NYE, 1999: a poll of sorts

  • I responded on the nest board about this.  I had dumped Jay since he hadn't proposed (gave him a deadline, he thought I was bluffing and I totally wasn't) and spent that NYE with a new guy.  :)

So yeah, nothing is the way I thought it would be!  I was living in SA (ick), working a crap job at an animal hospital.

  • I'd graduated high school that spring, was on winter break from college, and was at a big house party with my high school friends where they played the Prince song over and over and over again.  I had on an outfit I'd bought at Express and was ready to party.  Then I had way too much to drink and at midnight, I had my head in a toilet and my then-boyfriend was holding my hair back.  Klassy way to ring in the new year.

I NEVER would have guessed that by 2009 I'd be in Texas married to my DH and having 1.5 kids.  I definitely thought I'd marry my HS boyfriend and we'd stay in Bismarck, ND, where we grew up.  Yikes .... very glad things worked out as they did!  ;)

  • Well I was a sophomore in high school and I wasn't aloud to go out on nights like this.  I just had a friend over, nothing too exciting.  I think my life is about where I thought it would be.  My story is boring.
  • I was a software troubleshooter for a computer company, living in College Station, TX., fresh outta school (grad. in May of '99).  I spent NYE working, making sure all systems were up and running as each time zone hit midnight.  It suuuuucked at the time, but I guess it's kinda cool looking back.  I mean, we were basically waiting to see if the sky was falling. =)

I never could've predicted the path I would take and where I'd be today, but overall, I'm living my dream, married to a more amazing man that I could've ever pictured, a SAHM with a beautiful daughter.  I feel so, so blessed, and it was worth every bit of strife along the way (and there was PLENTY!)

  • I was living in Austin (going to UT) but was celebrating in Houston since I was home for the holidays.  I don't really remember much else about NYE 1999.  Beer

I hoped I would be married with a kid (or a kid on the way) because I always said I wanted to have a baby by 30.

ZOMG.  I'm going to be 30 in 2010.  Indifferent

    Thanks, mlf.  You suck.

  • The hubs and I went to my cousins house for a party, but didn't stay long b/c we had the Uhaul coming in the morning to move to california.

No, MMT, you're just getting old and cranky.  Better drink your Metamucil and get into bed!

Keep 'em coming.  These are fun to read.

  • I was at a party with my college boyfriend. It was a fun party, but he was a terrible boyfriend. My life today is definitely what I HOPED it would be in 2009, but I must say I'm very glad I didn't end up with the 2009 boyfriend. It is crazy that it has been 10 years.

  • I was 15 years old and a sophomore in high school. I don't remember too much about what I did that night - but I'm pretty sure I just went to a friends house and 'hung out'.  Certainly G-rated, and uneventful.

My life is probably pretty close to what I imagined at that time:  Moved far away from my hometown upon HS graduation, graduated from college, teaching dance, married, and all that good stuff.  I probably imagined I'd have a kid - or have one on the way... but that's long before I fully grasped reality and finances  Wink

  • I honestly cannot remember.  Guess it must've been pretty lame Stick out tongue

The one thing I do remember about the dreaded Y2K was my boss's wife's job.  She worked for Pizza Hut (at the corp. level, a local store) and she and a bunch of her higher-up co-workers were hunkered down in a hotel ready to "save" the co from any technical glitches.  For about a week my boss joked that the world may come to an end on 01-01-00, but by god we'd all have pizza.  lol

  • My HS/ college boyfriend made me dinner at his parents' house and we stayed in because I didn't want to be around a bunch of crazy people who thought that the world would end at midnight (and we weren't legal to drink!)

I was a sophomore in college so I was technically living in Georgetown in a dorm, but was home in Austin for Winter break. I was under the impression I was going to marry that guy, so nope, my life is a lot different (and a lot better!) than I thought it would be then.

  • I was in college in San Marcos.  My group of friends had plans to go to a party, but we got that after midnight  because part of our group had to be picked up in Austin.  I was riding in a car on our way to the party when the clock struck midnight.

I never thought then I would be where I am now.  I thought I would be living in Austin and still single.  I do live in Austin, but it never ocurred to me I might be married to a wonderful man with a baby and another on the way.  I'm pretty damn lucky.

    :-)

Will do.  Right after I clean my dentures.

  • I was in college, junior year.  I went downtown to party and then the party went back to my apartment.  DH told me he loved me that night for the first time and being me, I reacted poorly -- I did not want to be in a serious relationship.  10 years later, married and have an adorable little girl.  I wouldn't change a thing.
  • yeah, mine must have been boring, as well, because i don't remember it at all.  i was probably home visiting my family in n ca and at a house party but i just can't remember that far back!

yes, my life is somewhat close to where i imagined it ... almost 30 (in one week, yikes!) and happily married with a baby and a house.

  • I was on day #3 in the military hospital in Charleston, SC with a bad kidney infection. My hs boyfriend was there with me and we wheeled my IV out to the lobby area to watch the ball drop with all the other patients. It was definitely not my favorite NYE.

I was a junior in hs at the time. My life is not exactly where I thought it would be. I never planned on living in TX.
  • I was a junior in HS and I was celebrating with the church youth group. Not very exciting but I was with my best friends at the time.

  • I was in San Diego with my brother.  We were visiting his girlfriend and her parents.  It was too fun!  My mom was all afraid that we wouldn't be able to get home because of all the Y2K crap.  HA!

I was still living with my parents and going to school and going off to Baylor in the fall.  I'm about where I thought I would be, I guess.  Married with a kid or 2.  Glad I didn't marry the guy I was with at the time though!

    me too...

Anyhoo...I was in LIC, Queens, NYC having a par-tay in my small apartment with my friends.  I was 2 years out of college and dating my college sweetheart....It was a good party, we played darts all night, my friend spilled his beer in my chia-pet, and my boyfriend broke my bed frame--it was one of those that folded into a couch--yay broke theatre techie living in Queens.  I can't believe we had that many people  fit in my small apt.  I thought I would marry my boyfriend and we would live in NYC (or if I had my way--outside of the city in Westchester Co.) and be theatre people for-eva!!

10 years later, I have moved on to a totally different career, and half-way across the country.  I married someone I never imagined and we have a wonderful son.   I never would have guessed this would be my life (but I love it!!!)

  • I was a junior in high school I guess, and it was one of the years we went to VA for Christmas.  I remember watching all of my family drinking champagne and being pissed that I was stuck there and not home with my friends as all moody teenagers would be.  Looking back, it was pretty cool seeing my mom and grandma getting hammered together.  I think I still have a picture of that somewhere.

I guess I'm probably where I thought I'd be, except for the fact that I never thought I'd be a SAH-ish Mom, but I feel so lucky and blessed to be where I am now!

  • I answered in the Nest poll.

I was a junior in high school and went to a party.  Kissed a hot senior (whoo-hoo!).

I don't think I thought too much about the next 10 years.  I was too busy thinking about next weekend.

  • I'll play!

When the clock struck midnight, I was standing on a newspaper stand at the corner of 6th and Congress.  I leaned down to kiss my loser of a boyfriend who was a very sweet guy but a really bad boyfriend.  Took me 4 years to shake him off.

I thought I'd be married at 24 and have my first kid by 28, because "28 is just a good time to have kids".  Ha!  Like my 20 year old self knew.  I was in college and a few boyfriends away from meeting my husband.

  • Where were you living, what were you doing, how did you ring in the New Year?  I was living and working here in Austin and I was out partying on 6th St to ring in Y2K. It was a blast! We were up on the balcony of Buffalo Billiards and people kept showing us their body parts like we were at Mardi Gras or somethin. Even the boyz...

And they played REM's It's the End of the World As We Know It during the countdown to 2000.Good times!

Is your life where you thought it would be if someone had asked you where you would be by NYE 2009? You know, it's even better than I had ever imagined. I feel so incredibly blessed.

  • I was a junior in college and my friends and I hosted a party at my parents house in upstate NY (they offered to let us have a party to keep us from going to NYC).  We all spend the night, people sleeping in the hallways, I slept in the living room on the floor.  The thing I remember most about that night was playing Bon Jovi, Living on a Prayer and jumping around screaming the lyrics at the top of our lungs!  haha!  I think I'm pretty much where I had hoped I would be, with a great family, a great husband and working at a job I'm proud of.

  • I also posted on the main board... here is my response to that post:

My mom's family had a Family Reunion!  We all came to Puerto Rico and had a big party in an event's hall and rang in 2000!  It was my senior year of high school!

I also feel really old reading these posts. But I have lots of younger friends so I guess I'm used to it. What is more significant is that I cannot remember what I was doing NYE 1999. Apparently many of you have much better memories than me. I do remember my boyfriend at the time and ditto others on being so glad we are not still together.

ETA- oh and at the time I had no idea what my life would be like in 10 years.  I guess I hoped I would be married with kids and I am.

No ***!  If MMT needs metamusil WTF do I need then. I will be 38 in 2010 how the hell did that happen?  Damn I am OLD!

  • Oh man, these make me feel old too!
  • I was living in Boulder.  My then-boyfriend (and part of the reason I moved to Austin) had come up to visit with his roommate and her partner.  We were watching the countdown and just when there were only a few seconds left, the TV completely cut out.  We all looked at each other like, Oh sh!t, Y2K is for realz!!!

I could never have predicted that I'd be a SAHM, married to a Brit with beautiful twin boys.  I really feel that since leaving high school, life has gotten better & better each year.  And I think that's a pretty lucky way to be.

    ^  yep.  same here.

I was 4.5 years out of college, and living/working here in Georgetown (at the same job I'm still at).  Of course I had to work that night, in anticipation of the all the expected rioting/looting/general pandemonium that the end of the world brings with it...  Stick out tongue

Worst of all, I was engaged to and about 11 months away from marrying a really horrible bf/fi.  Whom I finally dumped precisely 1.5 months later - whew!  Huge bullet = dodged.

As such, my life now is SO much better than I ever thought it would be:  Waited patiently for the right husband, I have been successful at my career and am financially secure.  And of course, I have the most amazing little boy and have realized how much I'm meant to be his mommy.  And, I'm now even living in the very neighborhood I used to patrol in 1999, fantasizing about someday being able to live here, and wistfully thinking that it would never happen because we (me and dumb old, fiscally irresponsible ex-fi) would be broke for the rest of our lives.  My, how times change.  Big Smile

  • Mine's lame. I was a senior in HS, and an office cashier at our main grocery store in town.  Being y2k and all, we stayed open so everyone could stock up for the end of the world, I mean, year (seriously, why bother if you think the world is ending?). Lame-o me, worked and closed that night. I rang in the New Year listening to crappy intercom music and watching crazies straggle in for supplies. (No alcohol, town was dry at the time...otherwise we would've had people come in for booze, I suppose.)

My life's about where I thought it would be.  I wasn't sure on kids back then, but I knew I was going to law school. I thought I'd be in a completely different practice area, but I'm happy where I am. And I'm still with J (yep, since HS).  I guess I had no inkling I'd have one beautiful little monkey and already be pregnant with the next one! But. I wouldn't change it for anything. :)

  • I was a senior in high school and I spent NYE with my boyfriend Steven.  We watched movies (I remember watched The Matrix), setting off fireworks in his yard and eating a bunch of snack foods.  Nothing super exciting.  I never thought that in 10 years I wouldn't be living in DC anymore... never thought I would be living in TX for sure.  I always wanted to live in South Carolina or Florida when I was younger.  I hoped to be married by the time I was 30 and have a kid.  Working on the kid part. Smile
  • Haha..re-reading this, I can totally tell that I've had no sleep this week. I wrote about where I was on NYE 1998. On NYE 1999 I was a senior in high school and I stayed home with my family. My hs boyfriend came over and we hung out and waited to see what was going to happen with the Y2K stuff. At that point I knew I would be moving to Texas after graduation and I thought I would be going to A&M.

Well, obviously, we'll be celebrating NYE at the nursing home.  Hopefully we'll manage to stay up until midnight. I hear there's going to be pudding. =)

  • I was living in China, and the other expats and I celebrated by shooting fireworks off the foreigner's dorm at the university.  (we were students there)  It was pretty fun.

  • Let's see, I had just started college in my hometown of Albuquerque, NM. But, I was visiting my parents in Sacramento, CA on NYE 1999. I honsetly cannot remember what I did on NYE. I am sure I probably spent it at my parents friends house or something equally less memorable.
