Anyone not offered NT scan?

My OB offered the quad screening at my next appt (I'll be 14w4d), and then a level 2 u/s if the quad screen came back positive, but never mentioned the option of an NT scan. I don't think I would have chosen to have the scan, which is why I didn't ask the doc about it, though I am curious as it seems to be the norm on these boards. FWIW, I also don't think we'll be doing the quad screen, either.

Re: Anyone not offered NT scan?

  • My doc suggested a level 2, but said he doesn't think the NT is necessary, but we could do it if we wanted.

  • my doc asked me if I wanted to do any tests, and I specifically requested the NT. I will also be seeing a perinatologist for my big ultrasound.

I think a lot of insurance plans don't cover the NT so your doc might not have mentioned it for that reason.

  • it was never offered to me during my first two pregnancies, it was this time just because the office changed things up a bit. We are doing it more so because I want to be prepared if God forbid anything were to be wrong.
  • It was not offered to me--the standard for a woman under 35 at my OB's office is the quad screen at 16 weeks. I feel very strongly about wanting to know of any potential problems early so I asked about the NT scan and she gave me a referral to a perinatologist for one. I will also see the peri for my 20 week ultrasound. Total extra cost to us is $50 for both ultrasounds so it is worth it to me.

  • It was not even discussed during my 1st pregnancy and when I asked my OB about it he said it's newer than the quad screen but basically tests for the same thing.  I guess I will see this time out if it's something offered. I am switching OB's but they are within the same general medical group.  I don't even know if I will do the quad screen (AFP or something right) because I have heard the results are very inconclusive and just say their is a possibility of something being wrong.
  • My Dr actually dissuaded me from having an NT scan.  I just asked her about it, and she said if I wanted to have it done, fine, but just to be aware that the scan only estimates certain risks to the baby, and that the test tends to err on the side of finding you at risk for certain things.  She just warned that if you do have it done and there is something there, an amniocentesis is usually done afterwards which is a more invasive procedure, and she usually doesn't condone medical procedures without a very good reason to have one.  Does this make sense? So we basically decided not to have any additional "unnecessary" tests done since we are not at risk for any particular diseases based on our ages, family history, and ethnicities.

  • My Doctor offered the quad screening, but not the NT scan as well.  I really like and trust my doctor and figure there must be a reason they opt for the quad screening.  We'll talk about all of our options at our next appointment in 3 weeks.

  • It is recommended by ACOG, but some doctors still don't have the training to do NT screening.

I work in OB medical education and it honestly irks me to read some docs aren't offering it. They should be referring out of the practice if they can't perform it themselves. Whether a not a woman wants it is totally her decision, but it is part of their job to counsel their patients on what's avaialble.
