How to get boobs to dry up?

My boobs are massive and are hard as rocks. How do I get rid of this milk? How long will this last???

  • If you want them to dry up permanently, do the following. This is what I did and mine dried up within two or three days, tops.

First of all, start out by expressing juuuust enough milk every few hours to relieve the pressure. ( You can do it by hand or with pump- I did hand.) Don't express everything because it'll trigger your body to make more milk, which is obviously not what you want. :)

The following things when taken orally dry up milk: Parsley, sage, thyme, peppermint (NOT the fake stuff), and Sudafed. My lac. consultant told me to combine a few tbsp. of parsley and dried sage in a tea ball and make a cup of tea with it every few hours. She suggested not taking the Sudafed at the same time because if you stop lactating too fast it can make your hormones freak, but I did it anyway. (Hey, I figured a few days of crazy were better than up to a month of obsessing about my boobs. :P) Take the Sudafed as suggested. Altoids have natural peppermint in them, if you also want to try that.

Also, this sound weird but it works: Take fresh cabbage leaves, devein them, and put them in your bra. When they're not cold anymore, take them out and put new ones in. Do this constantly. The coolness helps the pain and the cabbage apparently dries up milk.

Keep cold stuff on your breasts and keep HOT STUFF OFF! That means hot water and steam, so take showers very carefully.

This worked wonders for me. Like I said, I stopped lactating in a matter of days. GL!

  • Oh, wow.  I don't know what to say to you.  Probably not helpful to you, but I just don't understand why you would want them to.  Your baby is 5 days old--why aren't you at least trying to breastfeed?

    K, I'm done.

  • crazy as it sounds. cold cabbage leaves. i used them for 24 hours the first day. then i used ice during the day and slept with them at night under a sports bra. they dried up in about 5 days. they hurt less when i used them so i dealt with the weirdness of wearing cabbage. i wore a sports bra all the time and don't take really hot showers. that makes them hurt more.
  • i got a lot of flack because i didn't want to keep bf-ing after the first 5 or so days. don't let anyone pressure you! it was definitely the right choice for my family. i'm SO MUCH more sane now that we're formula feeding, and my little girl is strong, healthy, and has a great temperament. do NOT feel like a bad mom for that choice. being a mom is hard enough with other people criticizing you for stuff. :)

Hey, you don't know her situation. Breastfeeding is a very personal choice and I don't think anyone should have to feel guilty about what they choose or justify that choice to anyone!

  • you could try breastfeeding
  • Seriously?!  She didnt ask you for your opinion on whether she should BF. People like you piss me off.

It will take a good 2 weeks for them to dry up completely.  The pain should end soon.  I would not do anything to make them continue to fill up.  Avoid putting your chest directly into hot water when showering.
