For us, if it has a dairy product in it, 2 days. Straight up meat, veggies, etc I'll go 3-5 days depending on what it is and how it's stored. We usually set about 2 days worth of food in the fridge and freeze the rest so we're not throwing out tons of food after the holidays.
I go by the sniff/sight test. As a general rule, I don't go anymore than 4 days, but that's THE latest. It's more like 2-3.
Little Man (4 years old---holy cow) He's the single greatest thing I've done in my life and reminds me daily of how fun (and funny) life can be. He's turned out pretty swell for having such a heartless and evil mother.
