Breastfeeding

Can I make a FFC and ask for advice?

I'm having problems with my weight and energy while BFing.  I've always been a small woman (5'4 105 lbs soaking wet and have worn a size 0 since middle school).  I gained over 40lbs while prego and dropped all the weight in the first 3 weeks pp. Now I weigh less than I did pre baby and I'm tired all the time.  All of my pants fall off me and I've had to buy some size 00 pants.  Sometimes its hard to find enough time to eat but I have always been a big eater and have never kept weight on.  I take prenatals and eat 3 meals a day and snacks.  I feel like my baby is sucking all the energy from me.  He is a big baby at 20 lbs at 5.5 mos and was 9.9 at birth).  I wanted to BF for a year at least.  Now I've added in one bottle of formula every day or so to give my body a break. I overheard my mother, MIL and SIL talking about how they want to tell me to start weaning because I am too thin and tired all the time.  No one had the balls to tell me this although my mother did tell me later when I said I'd overheard.  At first I was really hurt but maybe they are right.  I just assumed that all new moms are tired all the time.  These women all BF'ed for over a year and are normally huge BFing advocates but they all feel this way.  What should I do.  Please don't flame me for this.  I try not to talk about weight issues because I know it can be a hard topic, but I am really seeking advice and not critism.

  • can you consult with your doc?  maybe a hormonal issue is keeping you from gaining and making you tired?

Have you considered what kinds of foods you are eating?  Making sure to load up on complex carbs and protein rich foods?  If you are pretty sure that nutrition (for you not the baby because milk gets priority) is not part of the weight and energy issue then personally I would consider weaning.  It looks like you've made it quite a while so I'm sure your LO got plenty of benefits and will be happy and healthy either way.

  • No flames from me! It sounds like you are going through a tough time. It seems like you aren't getting enough calories. I know it can be hard to find time to eat, maybe you could try and eat higher fat foods? Avacado, nuts, olive oil...maybe a milk shake? You could talk to your doc and see if you could get a referall to a nutricianist? ps i am a terrible speller and I am posting on my phone so sorry for the errors! It sucks when you know it is wrong but cant fix it.

This could be.  I guess I need to really watch what I eat and maybe take more supplements.

This sounds like a good idea. I dont know when I'll find the time to go to a nutritionist but maybe I can get some information on what a nursing mother needs and make more of an effort to get all that is needed.  I really just eat whatever I'm craving and whats convenient which isnt alway healthy and protein rich etc.

  • It may also be your thyroid. Having a baby can throw them all out of wack!

I know that my levels say that I'm overactive right now, but I am tired and hungry all the time and that is usually typical of someone with an underactive thyroid.

Find a good endocronoligist(sp?) that will look at symptoms instead of just your level and treat and work with you.

    GL!!!

  • You could try using a website like babyfit.com to track your foods all day...it will tell you what nutirents you're getting to see where you need to improve. You can tell it you're breastfeeding and it adjusts for that based on your height and weight.

    GL!

  • Everybody has given good advice so far, so I don't really have anything to add to it except that I was much more drained than I thought I should be at that point.  I didn't lose weight like that, but I did feel unhealthy and absolutely exhausted.  It got better and I'm still BFing.  It sounds like you have done an awesome job already and I hope you get some answers or find something that works for you!

My first thought in reading your OP was thyroid too.  I hope you can find some answers so that you can feel better and continue BFing!
