How long until STTN???

How long did you wait before letting LO try to STTN? She is 1 month old now actual but adjusted she is still in the negative! She has been home a little over a week now and dr said to keep waking her every 3 hours. I called the dr and said she was not interested in eating as much during the night so they gave me the okay to let her sleep between 4 and 4 1/2 hours. Most nights she has been doing okay with this. How long before you were allowed to let LO STTN or at least try to??

Re: How long until STTN???

  • Andrew came home 3 weeks past his due date and we didn't wake him up to eat (the pedi wanted us to).  We didn't wake him up to eat because we tried it a couple of times (in the hospital and 1-2 times at home) and he wouldn't eat because he was too tired. He needed his sleep.  He gained weight so the pedi was okay with us not waking himm.

He started STTN around 6 weeks old...by 8 weeks he was consistantly sleeping 8 hours.  Sometime before 3 months (not sure when) he was sleeping 12 hour consistently. (He's unusual though.)

You are very blessed!! We let Cooper eat whenever he wakes up at night. 4 1/2 hours is the longest he will go. We have a baby scale though, so I can make sure he is gaining weight.

    :) thanks

I should say that Andrew went 4 hours at night usually (when he came home) but during the day even sometimes he would sleep for 6 hours!! He was a tired, tired boy.  But he needed his sleep for sure.  Every baby is different!

  • DS didn't truly STTN until 4-5 months actual (2-3mo. adjusted).  I think when he reached 10lbs (around 2 months actual) or so, the pedi said we could feed on demand in the night, so if he went a longer stretch without food, that would be ok.
  • My Pedi told me to wait until he gained was 7 pounds before we stopped the 3 hour feeds at night. This week he hit the 7 pound mark and we have been letting him go at night (pedi said not to let him go longer then 7 hours), unfortunately the longest he has slept has been 4 hours so far.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • STTN??!?!? What is that?  Gunner is not doing it yet.  My first son did at about 8 months.  I guess I just spoil them.  Oh well. He is my last and I am not worried about it.  Sorry I am no help. :)
  • Ours started STTN about 8 hours when they were 3 months old (actual age).  We stopped waking to eat when they weighed at least 8lbs.  By 4 months they were going 12 hours at night and eating every 3 hours during the day.

  • Oh I would love for my LO will start sleeping more then 3.5 hours. Some days she sleeps 4 hours a night (and we love those nights), but other nights (most nights) she only sleeps for 3 hours. Maybe her magic number is 3 months. One can only keep dreaming. LOL

  • LO slept 7 - 8 hours at a time twice this week, but last night she didn't.  I hoping that we are getting close to STTN.  She'll usually go about 3 - 4 hours between feedings.  Last night was only woke up once, because stupid DH set the alarm so he could watch football.  I think it scared LO and she woke up at that point.
  • We never had to wake either baby because it was like clockwork they'd wake up every 4 hours to eat.  On the rare occasion they went 5-6 hours at the beginning, we'd let them sleep.

Our babies now are 4 1/2 months old, 2 1/2 months adjusted and have been STTN most nights for the past 2-3 weeks or so.  They go down sometime between 7-8pm and wake around 7-8am.  If one does wake up now, it's around 4-5am, take a quick few ounces and go back down for a few hours.  That being said, their day time feedings are different.  It's no longer every 4 hours.  After their first bottle that's around 8am, they take a quick nap, play and are ready to eat again usually around 10:30am.  Then they take another bottle usually maybe play a bit more, and are out until close to 3pm or so, sometimes longer.  Then another bottle and they usually play, maybe a quick nap here and there until 6 - 6:30pm when we start our bedtime routine.  They are on demand and sometimes between that late afternoon bottle and bedtime bottle they "demand" another and we comply!  We have found the more they eat during the day, the more wake time they have and the better naps they take, the better they sleep at night.

  • my daughter started sttn pretty much on her own about 2 months ago. (2 months adjusted or so) the doctors didn't say that we had to wake her, and she seems to be making up for it during day feedings. (she eats every few hours during the day, every 2-3 hours or so.)
