which girl name do you like better?

I am stuck on 2 girl names and am going crazy.  Which one do you like better?  My last name is Driscoll is that helps too.

 1) Riley    2) Isla (this is pronounced eye-la)

Also, would it be a big deal for you if you thought people may not know how to pronounce your baby's name?  I think Isla is self-explanatory to pronounce, but you never know with some people??

Re: which girl name do you like better?

  • I like Isla.  My DS's name is Andre' and people sometimes struggle and DD will be Anesa (an-ee-sa).  Even with the most pronounce-able (not a wod) names, you are going to run in to someone who will struggle and try to make it more difficult.

  • I like Isla, but I will admit, I didn't know how to pronouce it until you said how...so I wouldn't assume everyone will know how to pronouce it.
  • Well, Rylee is one of ours, so of course I am partial to that one :0) I think the name Isla is beautiful, but I would have a problem naming my child something difficult to pronounce only because before I was married I had an impossible last name and even that drove me crazy. I can't imagine having to deal with a first name that people are pretty much guaranteed to mess up.

  • Neither one is truly my style. But #2 would be my preference  - although I don't agree that it's self-explanatory to pronounce.
  • I like Isla, but I have a feeling that many people are going to pronounce it the way it looks (Is-la).

  • I like Isla!!!

My son's name is Liam and with my DH's family's THICK southern accent they pronounce it "Limb" haha So I tease DH that I am going to write BRANCH on a onesie for him... haha :)

  • Isla...but it's a name that's going to constantly have to be pronounced for people. I too have one of these names...some days it's a PITA to constantly pronounce for everyone and their dog...otherwise you get used to it and it's not so bad,

  • I really like Isla, it's been popping up on the baby name board quite frequently, so it's getting popular (at least on the bump).  I have an IRL friend who is naming her baby Eyla...an alternative to Isla, that people may have less trouble pronouncing.  I prefer the spelling Isla FWIW.
  • ISLA!!!!   I love, love, love it!

Riley is nice, but it is androgynous...Isla is so lovely and feminine.

We are naming our baby girl Isla!  I love the name.  I knew people might have to have it pronounced for them, but so far people have asked me how it's spelled and then said it does make sense.  In fact, my SIL didn't need help pronouncing it at all.  Because of the actress Isla Fisher, some people already know it.  Besides, if you love the name enough that shouldn't be important.  Her family will know her name.

    This is EXTREMELY helpful!  Thanks!!!

  • I like Isla better, but I do not think you can assume people will know how to prounce it. I was thinking "ees-lah" because I read it as Spanish at first, since that is the Spanish word for island.
  • I vote Riley,since that's what we're likely going with! [:)

Also, I would pronounce Isla like Is-lah, but I was a Spanish major so that's what I read first!

  • I like Isla out of those two.  Lots of people are going to pronounce your child's name incorrectly.  That does not matter.

    This.

  • Thanks for all the feedback girls!  I guess I just thought since the word "isle" is a common word..meaning island and pronounced like "aisle" (British Isles, Isle of Capri, etc.), then isla woule be a breeze to pronounce for people you werent sure.

  • Definitely Isla. It's beautiful and simple to pronounce. It's exactly like the word "island" which doesn't confuse anyone.
