Babies: 3 - 6 Months

rice cereal

anyone give cereal before the 4 month mark? I was kinda talked into it by my mother and now feel guilty for doing it

Re: rice cereal

  • don't feel guilty but I would talk to your pedi because there is reasons why they are not supposed to eat solids before 4-6 months.  How old is your LO and how much is he/she eating of it?

  • Nope, I am a total rule follower and waited to get the OK from the pedi. He told us to go ahead and start at 4 mo to see if it helped with her reflux.

  • I started B on cereal at 3.5 months - he hated it so we mixed it with green beans.  He still hated it, so we just gave him straight green beens and it was a success!  I got the okay from my pedi though.  He is 21 pounds 12 ounces now and was 17 or 18ish whenever we started solids.  He had quite the hearty appetite and I had a hard time filling him up with formula.  He was drinking around 36-40 oz. a day!

  • usually the guidelines are that they have doubled or almost doubled birth weight, they are eating more than 32 oz, and they can hold their head up really well.  Some pedis start before six months with cereal and stage one foods, some pedis say just cereal at four months and some say nothing until six months.  Also, a lot of it is about allergies as well.
