Sorry, but be warned that this is a bit of a "Debbie Downer" question -
Unfortunately, with my history one of the big risks is stillbirth (because the placenta might not be able to give the baby what he needs). According to my MFM this morning, the risk of stillbirth greatly increases after 32 weeks.
He said that, if we make it to that point, I'll start having 2 ultrasounds a week to check on the little guy and if, at any point they see any indication that he'd do better out than in, we'll discuss induction. I asked what they'd be looking for in the ultrasounds - "You mean growth restriction?" He said yes, but also other things.
I'm wonding what they can look for to make sure he's doing okay in there. Any idea what those "other things" are?
TIA
Re: How can they tell if my baby is thriving?
they can check for growth, blood flow through the placenta, I think they can even do more indepth checks on the placenta to make sure it's still functioning as well.

I'm sorry that you are having to deal with all of this. It sucks. And, I don't think you are being a Debbie Downer, I think that you are trying to be informed and prepared.
I don't know what they are looking for, but I would guess that they are looking to make sure that the placenta looks healthy, that there is appropriate fluid for the baby. I'm sure that they are checking your platelets and blood pressure--though that is not part of the u/s, it is part of the screening, I'm sure, when you go in.
I'm glad that your doctor is being so careful. My thoughts are with you!
