Success after IF

How can they tell if my baby is thriving?

Sorry, but be warned that this is a bit of a "Debbie Downer" question -

Unfortunately, with my history one of the big risks is stillbirth (because the placenta might not be able to give the baby what he needs).  According to my MFM this morning, the risk of stillbirth greatly increases after 32 weeks.

He said that, if we make it to that point, I'll start having 2 ultrasounds a week to check on the little guy and if, at any point they see any indication that he'd do better out than in, we'll discuss induction.  I asked what they'd be looking for in the ultrasounds - "You mean growth restriction?"  He said yes, but also other things.

I'm wonding what they can look for to make sure he's doing okay in there.  Any idea what those "other things" are?

TIA

  • they can check for growth, blood flow through the placenta, I think they can even do more indepth checks on the placenta to make sure it's still functioning as well.

  • They can see blood flow reduction in the placenta as well as growth restriction. Thankfully growth restriction doesn't happen over night so when the baby's growth slows down they will start knowing it is time. (((((BIG HUGS)))) I hate that you have to go through this. Seems to me that after everything you have been through you should get to have an easy pregnancy.
  • Not sure if this relates, but since I went overdue, they were checking amniotic fluid to make sure there was enough.
  • I'm sorry that you are having to deal with all of this.  It sucks.  And, I don't think you are being a Debbie Downer, I think that you are trying to be informed and prepared.

I don't know what they are looking for, but I would guess that they are looking to make sure that the placenta looks healthy, that there is appropriate fluid for the baby.  I'm sure that they are checking your platelets and blood pressure--though that is not part of the u/s, it is part of the screening, I'm sure, when you go in.

I'm glad that your doctor is being so careful.  My thoughts are with you!

  • During a biophysical profile they look for practice breathing and a certain number of kicks/movement too.  I think it's great that your docs are being so cautious, they will be able to catch an issue before it turns into a problem.
