To the babynames board it would be a total mispelling of Michael.Nobody ever gets it right but I like it. I think if I posted that we wanted it for a boys name, some people over there would freak out.

I think different spellings are fine when it's cultral.
A lot of girls in my area are Awa (Ava) and Silwia (silvia) because they are polish. my friend is Mapia (Greek for maria)

I play on the BN board sometimes. I don't have any problem with ethnic names and I think many are beautiful. My great-grandmother was Lissa (she was Swedish). It's real name, but a lot of posters would say, "Oh, that's made-up."
What irks me is the posts that are "Omg, don't you think MahcKayyelahe is so cute?" or "I want my kid to be unique so I'm naming him Aaydyne." Gag.
