Hiya.
We took Bucko to the vet again last night because his ears and anal glands were funky again. We were told that there's a solid chance he is allergic to the food we've been feeding him and should switch him to something like lamb and rice food to see if he gets better. We also are meant to give him allergy meds everyday to help.
Do any of you have any advice or experience with this?
Re: Pet owners - allergies to food?
My English Bulldog has a lot of allergies that the vet thought was related to food. She suggested switching him to a salmon/potato food. She said fish is the best for dogs with allergies (who knows though). I do know that many of his problems have gotten better in the past 6 months that he has been on that food.
We also give him Benadryl everyday because she thinks he has some seasonal allergies.

Tedda my chow/chow has bad skin allergies (and is allergic to fleas) so we have to be careful what food we feed her.
We are in a delimma now because we switched food because Scarlett, the new one was having intestinal problems with the old food, now Tedda's Skin allergies have gotten bad again.....AGGGGGHHHH
Somehow I'm going to have to figure a way to feed them all at once and different foods or find a happy medium food.
MIL's dog is allergic to beef, so she can't have anything with beef in it or she'll start itching RIGHT away. her skin gets dry, ears get red, and she needs benedryl to help stop the itching.
I'm not sure if she gets meds every day, but I know that they have to monitor her closely to make sure she only eats what they give her, and doesn't get into any other dog food/people food in the house. For my mom's dogs that do get meds every day, they have to hide them in wet food, cheese, or peanut butter to get them to eat the pills. GL! Poor dog!

Well, I bought some Iams Lamb and Rice food last night, so we'll see where that puts him.
I just feel so bad.

It happens quiet often actually. Switching his diet can help tons!
Them Iams Lamb and Rice is a good choice. If that doesn't work try another brand.
Max is allergic to everything. We make meat and maybe rice for him every night. He has a reaction to almost all dog foods, it's actually MUCH cheaper for us to cook for him than to buy the special dog food. He likes fresh food rather than the bagged food anyway.
Poor pup can't eat most dog treats either.
When max eats the wrong things his entire intestinal track gets inflammed and he gets very sick. Poor guy.
GL with Buckly!

This. Iams is not a very good food - plus it is way over-priced. My cocker has bad food allergies and he is on a protein-only diet. Do you have a pet food store besides PetSmart? The only nice foods they carry are over-priced and usually other stores have a much better selection. It is completely worth going with the better foods when allergies are involved because of the fillers mentioned above.

My cat has a ton of allergies that cause these huge bleeding sores on her skin. The vet said it is most likely a food allergy (prob soy, corn, or wheat). I switched her to Blue Buffalo brand food and it has made a world of difference.
She has not gotten skin sores in a long time and her overall allergies are much much much better. Blue Buffalo is soy, wheat, and corn free. I actually switched my dog over to that too and she loves the lamb and rice formula.
She eats that ten times better than she has ever eaten a food before. And her coat has improved.
I agree with all the above. And the website above is very informative. We were having issues with our Cooper -- he'd through up on his old dog food (we had him on Science Diet until we heard how bad it really is, then we had him on Wellness puppy, but he didn't do well with that, either). We now have him on Blue Buffalo's Lamb and Brown Rice formula and is doing great on it.
I hope your puppy feels better soon -- dog allergies are never fun.
