S/O Crazy MILs: what does your MIL want to be called?

She wants DD to call her "nani" and FIL "tata"

Which is strikingly similar to "mami" and "dada"

FI kept saying its not a big deal until he heard DD make some sounds this weekend that sounded like a bunch of dadadadadada.

I, being passive aggressive, said "well we really don't know if she's saying dada or tata, do we?"

  • DH talks about my tatas, and I am pretty sure he isnt referring to DD's grandmother....LOL
  • Loading the player...
  • tata? i have never heard that one before. and it makes me think of boobs.

my mil is going with gigi -- grandmom g-last name. doable.

    LMBO!

  • DH's parents want to be called Nana and Poppa and my parents are Grammy and Grandpa (although my nephew calls him Gaga). I figure we'll let Grace call them whatever she wants.

  • I'm a big believer in that kids are going to call you whatever they want anyways, but we have my parents = grandma and grandpa, my DH's mother = mom mom (apparently a NE thing), and my DH's step mom = I have no idea she keeps changing it, and my DH's dad = pretty much think he could care less that he has a grandson.
  • Funny you should bring this up because my MIL thought dd was going to call her mom mom!  Are you *** kikking me?!?!  She was referring to herself as mom mom when I was pg and I had dh nip that, he told her no way, she has a mom already.

Sooooo don't you know the crazy lady was over the other day and said to dd, "mom mom's here"  I just looked at dh and he was like NO, you're not mom mom, her mom is right here!

  • My parents: Grandma/grandpa

In-laws: Nana and Pappa. Which annoys me because it reminds me of banana!

I just always say grandma and grandpa when talking about either side...my LO will say what she wants when she starts talking.

  • Anyone call their grandma, grandmom??  I always said grandma and when she gave us gifts/cards etc, she always wrote Grandma!  Well, MIL writes Grandmom, that pisses me off, she just has to get the mom in there!

  • DD's crazy grandparents have gotten so convoluted with these names it's freaking unbelievable.

My mom: was Grammy....now she wants YaYa.

My dad: doesn't care, but likes Poppy the best.

    MIL: Nonna

FIL: HE wants Grandpa....but MIL is being difficult and insists on calling him Poppy...even though my dad sort of had the name taken from the beginning.

Nope its grandma for me.  Well we use abuela and abuelo but same thing.

Maybe it bothers me because MIL is so crazy.

  • Funny I was just having a coversation today with DH about what his mother wants DD to call his step dad. His name is D*** so she signed the Cmas card " Love, Grandma Linda and Grandpa D***"  I'm Sorry but I just cant have DD daughter running around saying Grandpa D*** all the time.

  • Oh good topic. My (crazy) MIL wants to be called either "Zoomba" or "Cookie" and she wants my FIL to be called "KC" (His initials.) I told my husband that there is no way that my child is going to call his grandparents Cookie and KC- it sounds like they're a pair of exotic dancers, or worse.

Yeah, it's definitely not grandmom, I have to think of something smart to say to her the next time she says it.  I just have a problem with anyone else referring to themselves as mom when they are talking to dd.

MIL announced that she wanted to be Grandmom - I hate it - she is not Mom so you can not have it in your name.  I just kept referring to her as Grandma and she can like it.  She actually asked what DD would be calling ME - WTF?!  DH still referrs to her as grandmom sometimes...umm NO

  • My MIL is Oma and my mom is Gramma.

  • My Jewish MIL wants to be Bubby (pronounced Buh-Bee)...but she spells it Bube...which I just think is weird

ETA: I am loling at this thread - some of the things they want to be called are hilarious.

it looks like it should be pronounced "boob" that way or I guess bewb (rhyming with tube).

eta - my response doesn't make that much sense.  ::sigh::  I hope my brain starts working again when i go back to grad school in jan.

Haha, my grandma spells it "Bubbie". I agree, "Bube" just doesn't look right! :)

  • Nana just like my Mom has been for the last 6 years.  So when DD gets confused we will have to call MIL Nana D.
  • I didn't add in my mom.

She has no problem with "abuela" (Spanish for Grandma) but in doing baby talk with DD she ended up calling herself "belita" which is sort of short for "abuelita."

  • She wants to be called Nan, because her other grandkids call their other grandmother Nan and her Granny.
  • Nana, Pepe, Mem and Granddad are ours.

  • My parents: Grandma and Grandpa (so much easier since almost everything grandparents related that they sell say that!) :)

    IL's: Grammy and Poppy

Re: Zoomba, LOL...has she heard of Roomba, the vacuum?

  • My Mom: Ba (short for Babci [Polish])

    My Dad: Grandpa

    MIL: Nana

FIL: WANTS to be called Grandpa, but MIL is insisting he be called "Poppi"

MIL was kind enough to provide us with the correct spellings moments after I gave birth--like I was going to be addressing a card to her at that very moment or something.

  • My parents are Mama J and Papa J.  MIL wants to be called Mem - which I think is very fitting since it's the witch from The Sword and The Stone (well, they spelled it Mim in that movie).  I've decided that FIL is going to be called Grumpy.  Because he is.
