moving up to bigger bottles and playtex is playing a trick on me!!!

Okay, so my LO is up to 5, sometimes 6 ounces of formula and my SIL gave me a bunch of her old 8 oz bottles. She also used the drop ins and the liners that she gave me expand up to 10 oz. So I always measure the water with a measuring cup (5 oz), and 2 1/2 scoops of formula (5 oz). So why in the WORLD is the 8-10oz bottle FULL if it's supposed to be just 5 oz of formula?! I did it twice and double check and have no idea what i'm doing wrong. I do put a little cereal in each bottle to help him with reflux per my pedi but it's a rather insignificant amount. I use a 1/8 of a tsp measuring scoop and put two of those in a 5 oz bottle. I'm going insane because it's like telling me 2 plus 2 is 8! I dont get what I'm doing wrong. I called my SIL and asked her and she has no idea what I'm doing wrong either! Help is GREATLY appreciated!!

  • They just appear that way. I don't know why but the same thing happens to me. I poored it into a regular bottle to measure and be sure and it was the same amount I thought I put in.

I don't know anything about formula (I BF) but it seems like 5 oz. + 5 oz should = 10.

    THis... 5+5 = 10...

Also, I measure my concentrated stuff / water with a measuring cup, and I completely ignore the playtex liners.

  • wow apparently people don't understand sarcasm in my math comment. Oh well. The point is it's not matching up on the liners. Thanks to those who have been helpful. I guess if I'm measuring with measuring cups it can't be wrong, so I'll ignore the liners as well.

  • She doesn't mean that she actually puts in 5 oz of powered formula.  She puts in 2 1/2 scoops of formula to 5 oz of water.  The powder dissolves, leaving only 5 oz. of water in the bottle -- not 10 oz total.

LOL We're at the same ounce amount too so I knew what you meant.  But we use Playtex Vent Aire so I can't be of any help.  Sorry!

Would it happen to be because the liner doesn't go to the bottom of the bottle, which would make it not line up right with the markings???

  • I had the same problem with the 4oz drop ins.  We actually stopped using them because we couldn't tell how much LO was eating from them.
  • It depends which side of the bottle you are looking at. The bigger drop in bottles can use the regular liners or expandable liners. It will only hold 8-10 ounces if you use the expandable liner. One side of the bottle measures for regular liners and the other side for the expandable liners. Not sure if this helps, but it's all I got...lol!

Well, the formula powder has volume.  5oz water+ 2.5 scoops formula will equal more than 5oz.

As a solid substance, yes it has volume.  But once it's dissolves, it shouldn't change the water amount.  It's like putting sugar in your coffee...it doesn't turn it into a larger serving.

Actually... it will raise the volume.  Try it in a measuring cup.

This.  We did the same thing when we moved up.  I just buy the Target brand liners and use the markings that only go to 6oz.  When he starts eating more, I'll just have to get the expandable ones.
