Glider - Must have or wait and see?

With our tiny house I can't fit both a glider and ottoman in our nursery, so I found a glider/recliner online that I like for $800.  I know it will be helpful to have a decent sized, comfortable place to feed the babies in the nursery, esp. if I'm able to bf, but I'm wondering if it's worth the money and space it will take up.  Our house is a tiny ranch, so carrying them ten feet from the nursery to the living room couch might not be such a big deal.  It will take 6-8 weeks for delivery, so if I'm going to do it, I better do it.  What do you think?

Re: Glider - Must have or wait and see?

  • Glider is a must have, but I don't think it needs to be an $800 glider.

We have a plain ol' rocking chair right now, and I hate it.  I'm getting a glider for the twins.

  • I agree with pp. I found one I like on sale for 150.00. I love it but I would never spend 800.00 on one.
  • The price is the best I could find for a glider that reclines.  If anyone has suggestions on where to find a less expensive one, please share!

  • I got an easy boy recliner/rocker for $250 on sale on the furniture store...I would never spend $800 on one mostly b/c my house is pretty small too and it isn't going to be a "forvever" piece of furniture for us...but it is good to have a comfy rocker with the babies...ours is in the living room...we have a stationary chair in their bedroom that we hardly ever sit in...if they get up at night they come back to our bed with us (which is where we did the nighttime feeding back when)
  • My mom got me a glider and I think I used it twice.  It just wasn't comfortable for me and it didn't work the way I was holding DS to nurse.  RIght now, it is in DH's office with boxes piled on it.  I'll try it again, but I think I might end up selling it or giving it to my SIL (who is due in JULY!!!)

I might be the odd person out, but I wasn't a fan.  THe couch (and recliner/rocker lay-z-boy was way more comfy for me.

  • I just did another search and found one that's a tad smaller for $650 (incl shipping and tax) at Target.  Why that didn't come up in my hours of searching last night, who knows.  Still, it's a lot of money, so I'm just not sure.
  • we got a best chair glider/ottoman and I definitely do not regret spending the $, although I do plan on it being a long term piece of furniture since it is an upholstered one that looks like a regular armchair & I want to have it in my bedroom for reading, etc. It is soooo comfortable & both MH & I use it all the time.

that being said, I don't htink you have to spend a lot of $ to get a comfortable one that fits your space, although the recliner kind is probably harder to find. GL!

  • I went to a regular furniture store and bought a leather glider/recliner for $350 and we intend to use it after we're done with the babies.  Try a regular furniture store.  Especially now!  They are trying to unload inventory and with the economy there are some fabulous prices.

  • we got both of our rocking recliners on craigslist for $50 and $60... they are great - awesome condition, look perfect- and work for what we needed.... you don't have to spend $800... you don't need a GLIDING recliner either- a rocking one is just fine.

I do think a rocking/gliding recliner is the way to go- esp because you will likely need to sleep in the nursery at some point - when babies are sick, etc.  I slept in ours the other night b/c Gibby has a horrible cough and needed to be upright - so he layed on me in the recliner... thank God I don't have one of those regular glider seats- i could never sleep in that.

  • We got our rocker/recliner at Sam's Club for less than $300.
  • I would check out craigs list or some place like Once Upon a Child.  We got our there SUPER cheap at a baby consignment store and just took off the cusions and replaced them with over sized decorative pillows from Marshalls.  Maybe 50$ all together. I'm not crazy about gliders or recliners but know I'll need it.

  • Does the one you found glide while it is reclining, or only in chair mode?  I saw a glider/recliner I liked but you have to choose either glide or recline, not both at the same time, and I'd love to glide with my feet up.  I'm on the fence, too...

  • After doing some more measuring and searching (it became a sort of compulsion), I think I'm opting for one of these:

I know it won't be as functional as a recliner, but it's smaller, cheaper, and I can put the ottoman in the closet when not in use.  I'm not a fan of recliners or gliders, so this seems like a decent alternative.  I'll probably change my mind within the hour, though.  That seems to be my thing lately!

  • I could live without the ottoman. Definitely not worth $800. I used the glider a lot in the beginning but after that i nursed a lot laying down or on the couch.
